3CrazyDanesMom Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 So we are getting our baby mid October and I'm trying to decide on foods. We've decided on Harrison's High Potency coarse pellets. Doesn't he also need to be on seed and if so what do y'all recommend? I know this is in addition to fresh fruit and veggies, any advice is greatly appreciated!
SRSeedBurners Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 We only use seeds as a treat, specifically sunflower seeds and when I can, sprouted. Also you might find the smaller pellets are better as they won't waste as much. I found with the coarse size pellets, when they crack it, pieces go flying everywhere. The Harrisons 'fine' size is what we feed.
3CrazyDanesMom Posted September 20, 2016 Author Posted September 20, 2016 Thanks for the advice! This stuff gets so overwhelming for me, worrying about making sure I'm doing everything right.
Timbersmom Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 I always keep a good quality seed mix available to Timber. They make safflower based and "no sunflower" mixes. If they have peanuts in the shell in the mix, I pick them out. They can carry a nasty fungus.
3CrazyDanesMom Posted September 20, 2016 Author Posted September 20, 2016 Can you recommend a brand Timbersmom?
Timbersmom Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 When I was avoiding sunflower seeds, I used this one: Higgins Safflower Gold Natural Food Mix for Parrots. After the vet said he really needed to add a few grams, and I read Dave's post on how he didn't think sunflower seeds were bad for them if not the sum of your diet, I use this one: Higgins Vita Seed Parrot Food, 3 lbs and this one: Higgins Vita Seed California Blend Parrot Food, 5 lbs. I do have to pick the peanuts out of all of these but there aren't that many. I just pick them out when I put the seed inn his bowl. I'm sure there are a lot of other good ones out there. A lot is dependent on what your bird will EAT. I've tried a few he didn't care for (who knows why).
judygram Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 I also feed Harrison's High Potency Fine pellets, I tried the coarse but it seems she doesn't waste as much of the fine and she has eaten it readily since I brought her home about 10 years ago so have never really tried any other brand, why fix what ain't broken.
