Hi there,

I'm Erica, and I'll be picking up my baby grey during the first week of October. I've already decided on a cage, but what toys or other goodies do you recommend I add to his/her cage?

Hi Erica. Congratulations on your new baby. On the list of essential toys, first would be a bell. Here's a picture of one of Dorians. attachment.php?attachmentid=26695&stc=1 It's specially made for birds so that they can't remove the clapper and possibly swallow it. I haven't met a grey yet that doesn't love beating up on their bell. A roll of adding machine tape is a popular cheap toy, just tie it to the side of her cage and let her shred it. Makes a glorious mess. If the cage is big enough adding a boing would be good. It's a spiral, bouncy rope perch that they can bounce and swing on. I'm guessing it mimics the motion of a branch swinging in a natural habitat. Add a bell to the bottom to make it more appealing. Expose him to a variety of foot toys while young. My Dorian wasn't exposed to toys when young and as such really isn't a toy guy. I'm sure others with more toy centred fids can chime in with more suggestions.

Hi Erica,

Welcome to the forum.

Our grey Nonsense loves destroying things so i make her toys out of old tissue paper rolls or cardboard boxes. I just stuff with newspaper put some treats more news paper more treats until the box is full and give it to her, within 5 mins its gone. The best thing about this toy is its free :)

When we brought home our first baby, his breeder put a little sleep tent in with him and his brothers. She would change them out every day so all three of the boys had one to take with them to the new home. Your breeder might give you some good ideas of what your baby plays with now. If it is practical, you could give your baby some toys now so when you set up the welcome nursery the toys are already familiar. I second the motion on the bell and the basket full of shredables and paper rolls. Another suggestion is to look into getting baby a harness and start using it from the beginning to mean super fun things happen when you go for a ride etc.

Thank you so much. I've read how much they enjoy bells. I'll be sure to get a few. I'm starting off with a 32x23 dome cage with an open top, but I plan to allow as much "out of cage" time as possible so he/she can get used to all of us. There are 5 in the family, including my husband and 3 sons, ages 17, 12 and 11. As far as adding machine tape/paper goes, do they just tear it up, or do they eat the paper as well?

Howdy!!! I'm in Houston, by way of New Jersey. We've been here a little over a year and a half.

Thanks Katana600! Those are great ideas. I'll ask the breeder if I can send some toys, and maybe even a tent so he/she will fell comfortable at home. I was wondering how they slept. I've seen videos where some parrots were sleeping on their backs with a light blanket pulled up to their necks. I thought that was so cute. I definitely want to get a harness so I can take him/her outside as much as possible before it gets too cool. My intentions are to get in as much socializing as possible so he/she will feel comfortable at home when I'm not there. Luckily, I work nights, and most of that time he/she will be sleeping.
