Poppy

I just received a gram scale and weighed Poppy and she weighs 278g at 16 weeks. Not sure how much she weighed before she left the breeder's because her scale conked out but she said she felt good and chunky

Poppy was 278 grams on August 27th and is now 290 grams. I am going to look up the average weight span for Timnehs to get an idea of where she falls

Sounds like she's growing like a weed. I do believe Timnehs get north of 300 for sure when full grown. Our little Congo piggy was 435 at 3.75 months when she came home. Four years later we're at around 480, sometimes hitting the 500 grand mark after a nice day of stuffing herself.

We've definitely noticed a drop off in her ability to fly sorties in the house. She used to be so fast and nimble. Now she's still fast but not she can't go around the living room 20 times. Now it's more like 10.

435 when you got her?? Wow! Poppy thoroughly enjoys her food and spends quite awhile eating in the morning and throughout the day. She is just now starting to become more interactive with me and trying out new sounds. The simplest new things she does thrills me. I have a lot of fun with her. She makes this funny "Woah! sound now after hearing me do it all the time. It almost sounds like a little bazooka. Just today, she started shoving her beak in my mouth. Not sure why but she likes it. I try to not allow her to do that because I know our bacteria isn't ok for them:-) Do any of your guys' do this?

No, DDorian doesn't do that. I've taught him that a "kiss" is him touching his beak to my chin or nose specifically because our mouths are not safe for them. Try keeping your mouth closed and re directing her to your chin, with lots of praise when she does what you want. Is she trying to feed you?

She was doing it when I was talking and even with my mouth closed, she shoved her beak in. I don't think she was trying to feed me...more exploring, I suppose.

Timber is 9 and weights a whopping 278 grams, so Poppy is coming right along! I don't remember the top end of the average for TAGs but I remember the bottom was 274. Timber was a bit under that when I got him.

Some sites say 300 grams as the base weight and a few in the 275 range. When do they plateau weight-wise? As in what age are they considered full grown physically?

Our 10 year old CAG tries to do the beak in mouth thing with my husband, the love of his life.

With young ones, breeders say it is a feeding response. With older ones, it's hormonal. Either way, best to discourage it as you are.

Love the name Poppy!

Thank you Kya! There is a CAG on Youtube named Poppy and she is the Grey that started my fascination with them. I also fell in love with her name and didn't even consider another name for our TAG. I definitely don't like her beak in my mouth and will be doing my best to discourage it:)

I haven't been able to find anything about the age at which they have attained full physical size, which is surprising. Timber was 5 and grown when I got him so I'm not sure. Anyone else know?

Wow...you know, the fact that Timber was a bit under 274 grams at age 5 when you got him makes me wonder if he was not properly fed by his previous owner. He goes to you who feeds him his fill and he eats and gains the weight that should have already been there...

HRH Inara is 5 now, and her weight since age 2 has been consistently between 282 grams empty in the morning up to 287 after eating during the day. This is why I call her my "sports model" compared to my (RIP) wild caught CAG who weighed a whopping 600 grams, consistently. So literally over twice her size.

She weighed beteen 287 and 290 when I adopted her and she arrived at age 2 but did not know how to fly and spent all of her time as a perch potato. After I taught her to fly, she is very active and gets a lot of flight time and exercise. She also had been on a diet of hooman comfort food prior to arrival..... My assumption is that she is and has been fully grown since about age 2 at least since her weight and size has stayed consistent.

I weigh her every other day and she enjoys "getting her numbers." :)

  • 3 months later...

Hi everyone, it has been a bit since I updated here. Poppy is doing great. She is 9 1/2 months now. I do have a couple of questions I would like advice for...is it normal for her to be jumpy when she is being held? I am the only one who handles her and she absolutely loves me holding her but I noticed she is very jumpy. Even as I type this, she is hanging near the back of my neck and jumped when I picked my phone up.

Also, after I have spent one-on-one time with her for a bit and need to tend to other things, I try to put her on her cage or the play tree and she does everything she can to avoid getting off of my hand. I always place her behind the perch or branch so it is between me and her and she has no place to go but the perch but she has learned that she can hang upside down from my hand to avoid stepping onto it. Sometimes she climbs down from her cage to walk to me. I use my laptop at the dining room table which is directly across from her cage in the living room.

Any advice would be appreciated!IMG_0482.jpg

Has it really been that long? Seems like you just got her! What you're describing doesn't sound normal. Is she always like that? Does she ever calm down? Mine will get jumpy at times but it doesn't last. And she gets super calm and lovey-dovey in the evenings.

Is she flighted? You mention she gets down and walks so I'm assuming not. This may have some to do with her jumpiness and not wanting to be put down. Our Caique was butchered by the breeder/feeder we got him from and he absolutely hated being put down. He would fight it and hang on with all three of his grabbies. That trait has lasted to this day although it's lessened even though he is now a fully skilled flier. All of my other birds are flighted and not have this issue.

Poppy is extremely affectionate with me all the time and would be on me all day if she could. Her jumpiness seems to be mostly after I first get her and then she will settle down. When I was typing my earlier post, I had just gotten her from inside her cage and she had been with me for about 5 minutes or less.

Poppy isn't flighted but her breeder did not clip her wings too short.

Sounds like an isolated incident then. Mine is never 100% calm and collected. She loses her damn mind frequently. It's why I call her my second wife. Ok, that was uncalled for HAAHAAHAA!!!

I don't understand your last statement. Not flighted but her breeder did not clip her wings too short? Do you intend to let her become flighted? Has she ever learned to fly? I think that makes a huge difference in their development.

My greys' breeders clipped them before I purchased each of them. I let their feathers grow out and both Tag and Cag are great flyers. I believe most breeders clip their babies so that we new owners can easily manage a new bird.

LOL at "It's why I call her my second wife" Poppy just does these little jumps/startles fairly often and then will immediately be fine. She just startles easily so that is what I am wondering about being normal or not.

I was saying she isn't flighted but her wings didn't get butchered as you said the breeder did yours. She did learn to fly before she got clipped and I am not sure if I will allow her to become flighted because of the risk of her escaping from my house. I have 6 kids at home still and her cage is on the main floor just a short distance from the front door and the sliding glass door going to the back yard which is opened and shut very frequently to let our Boxer outside. The front door is in front of her cage and the sliding glass door is to the side and both are in her direct line of sight. With this many people in the house, I just think it is too great a risk, even aside from the doors (toilets, kitchen, etc).

The Andy Griffith Show has become a favorite around here and I have been whistling the theme song to Poppy for months. Over the last few days, she has been whistling the first three notes—just enough for me to recognize what she is whistling:D She just did it and I whistled the first part of the song and she whistled her few notes right back LOL She did just start talking recently, as well. Her first word was "Peekaboo" and she says "Poppy" all the time. She has a small and higher pitched voice which is cute. Mine is deeper but I do speak to her in a higher voice.

Our Quaker Parrot Olive is such a jabber box, it's exciting to have another bird just learning to say things. Olive started talking at just 13 weeks and hasn't stopped saying new things since (she is 11-months).

When did your Grey's say their first words?

Greycie started talking a few words around 6-7 months. Then quit somewhere in her 2 year. She also does the first three notes of the Andy Griffith. That's as far as she got despite my 3 years or so of whistling the first half for her. She does 'peekaboo' too so it must be easy for them to say.

My talker is turning out to be my conure. She was on the curio cabinet above me screeching yesterday and I looked up and said "WUTT". Damned if she didn't sit up and there and say 'WUTT' for 10 minutes. So funny that one.

One side of the bars vs the other is a very different thing to a caged bird. Some birds are sweet as can be until they get back to that cage where they instantly turn Velociraptor. For many domestic fids, their cage isn't just instinctively their territory. It's their safe place which is how some become cage bound.

In Poppy's case, she may be insecure about being out, unprotected w/all the general activity. So she may need a few ticks to decide she's not exposed to anything too scary.

This is possibly a phase where you can help her become generally more confident & trusting overall if you're willing to go a little out of your way for the moment. Maybe make a conscious effort to quiet things down just a bit beforehand. Then be chirpy & talk her up for a few extra minutes initially.

Hopefully, you'll be able to see a difference after maybe a week or two. And you may have just won a little victory towards making her a more secure girl in the long run.
