Hey All!!

My boyfriend and I just got a 2 month old African Grey. But, it seems like he has blue and red feather tips. Is this a sign of illness? Any help is appreciate. Thanks!!image.jpg

Some of the grey feathers on the lower abdomen can have a bluish/purple tint to them. It is especially visible when said feathers get wet. Is that what you are referring to? I also know there are mutations present in some greys...like white tail instead of red or red feathers instead of grey, etc...but I don't remember any mutations with blue. Sorry I was not much help, but better pictures will get some of the experts to help you out.

2 months old is awful young. Do you know how to feed them at that age? Your picture isn't big enough to see what's going on there but it doesn't look normal to me. Maybe it's just the way baby is hold that one wing.

No, when I take photos with the flash on, you can see them (as in the photo). Otherwise, you can't really tell they are there.

To answer your judgemental questions. The man I got my bird from, has baby birds that he hand feeds at his store. We purchased him when he was only a few weeks old and have been to the store to LEARN how to feed him before taking him home. He is now on 2 feeding a day and is doing perfectly fine. Nothing is wrong with his wings either.

Clear cut example of someone who was just looking to be offended. Went back and reread my post, can you imagine if Dave or one of the long timers here would have responded to her!

Whoa...what happened? I think I missed the "judgmental" post. I am new here, as well, but have not encountered any judgmental people. If you are looking for advise, be prepared to answer questions. And it helps not to be ultra-sensitive. I was hoping you would stick around and allow the people here to help you. I wish you and your Grey luck.

I am a long timer! Tufani was just being sensitive about being judged. We DON'T judge on this site...Never have, and NEVER will! Our goal is to educate, offer methods of training, and always lean an ear for those parents that need help. Nancy

Its one thing to be sensitive about being judged, then it is another thing to lash out on people who are prying with questions so they can help.

I read through each and every post in this thread and cannot understand what was so judgemental.

I'm sorry but OPs defensive/paranoid responses shows me that social skills are lacking.

Can't help people if they don't know how to take help when it's given.

I think Sterling feels the same as I do that 2 months is too young to be brought home by someone with no handfeeding experience. I think I speak as most here would especially our grey expert, Dave007, that handfeeding is best left to those who know how to do it, so much can go wrong and personally I wish it were a law that the bird had to be fully weaned before it could be sold but that's all water over the dam now.

We are very passionate here about our greys and that can be interpreted as judgemental at times but we all want the same thing, to care for our beloved companions and give them the best we can give for they deserve it.

We ARE here to help you in any way we can and it does seem you are getting advice from the store on handfeeding, hopefully Dave will be along soon to add to the advice. I have to agree with Charlies Dad that the feathers can seem purplish when wet but they all are different just as they all are individuals.

BTW, hello and welcome to our family.
