Asharion
I have been browsing about craigslist, pet stores that carry parrot supplies, and online stores to try and find a great cage at a reasonable price. I want to make sure I bring something home that will be a good space for an African Grey. I would love some second opinions on the ones I have been viewing. So far, This is one of my top choices. It's 30" L X 30" W X 43" H, has a perch on top, the seed skirt, looks soundly built and has high reviews, and even better, is in the 300 or less price range. It's bar spacing however, is only 1/2" The left and right sides have horizontally orientated. Do you think this cage would be too small to comfortably house an African Grey during work hours? Runner up is this flight cage, at 31" L X 19" W X 61" H, but like the first, it's bar spacing is only a 1/2" It also doesn't include the seed skirt, and the bar orientation is vertical. Similar to the one above, this cage has a bit more depth at 31" L X 20.5" W X 52" H with less height. 30" L X 30" W X 43" H is similar to the one above, but the bar spacing, again, is only a 1/2". I've read that 3/4" is recommended. Is a half inch acceptable, or should I strive to find one in the 3/4 - 1" range? The one I would love to have the budget for is Petco's indoor Aviary. I spent a fair amount of time drooling over it. If wishes were fishes! The other important thing I wish to locate, is a travel carrier for transporting an African Grey! I've been just floored at some of the ridiculous prices I've seen - some of them want more for a tiny carrier than they do for a large-bird cage! That said, this so far has been one of the best I've been able to find. It's 12.5" L x 20" W x 13.25" H - is this an adequate transport size for an African Grey, or is it too small? The bar spacing is 3/4" wide. It is powder coated, not listed what metal type. There's also this version, but it has no place to hold food nor water, andI have doubts on it holding up to a Grey interested in ripping things up, which as I've been seeing, is natural parrot instinct ;P
SRSeedBurners
We have the Petco mink brown cage. It's a decent cage, hard to put together also too big to get out of our house without taking bird room door off. Otherwise it's sufficient. We also have the fold and go travel cage. Beware you will need to double secure the door. GreycieMae has learned to open it. The soft side - you need to make sure a Grey can't tear that one open. I know with another brand (cant' think of it right now) they make a Grey specific carrier because of their characteristics. I'm actually getting two of those soft sided carriers to transport the bad birds to the aviary. Using the travel cages is a pain and the trip is short. Asharion
I've seen some soft carriers that look rather like a backpack, they have made all sorts of sizes for different birds, even a massive one for a macaw and their long tails. Could that be what you're thinking of? Thanks for the feedback, Sterling - It's awesome you have hands-on experience with them! What do you use to secure your Fold N' Go carrier? I was thinking about using a plastic cable clamp I have, but wonder if a Grey wouldn't just chew it to pieces because of the material. It's the kind of closure used to secure cables. SRSeedBurners
Pak-o-bird makes specialty carriers for the different species. I secure the fold-n-go with a spring link/snap hook. Back before we had our outdoor aviary and they went outside in these cages for some fresh air, I didn't trust anything but a quick link. However our little Jardines can defeat those too. He knows how to unscrew them if they are loose enough to twist.
Greywings
Yes they can cut a nylon tie or plastic cable clamp very easily.
Asharion
Unless something better comes along, in the future I plan on picking up the petco cage. In the meantime, I've submitted questions to MAARS (a parrot rescue and sanctuary) about getting involved with them, so I can get some experience! Thank you for the feedback, it really helped There was another cage I loved the lock, build, and look of, and it's price, but it's too small a cage being only 2' by 2' by 3'. I wish they had another size up >.<
