Hello My name is Seth

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Seth I just adopted a 5 year old African grey Named Roux. I have had her for 7 months. She was some what neglected and completely terrified of her last owner and has a small plucking problem and she was on a full seed diet. Her poor wings where also butchered. They where cut so so short even past her flight feathers.

I joined just to get more info and help making her as happy as i can.

From what i can tell roux is a female and now i have her on a zupreem diet with whole nuts as treats and a mix of fresh peppers, bananas, carrots, and other assorted veggies. She really does not like the fresh food to much but in time i hope to get her eating more. I always wrap her bowl in news paper or cardboard to give her a challenge. she also has a mineral stone which she dose not care about at all and she has stone grit perches which she like to scrape her beak accros.

I live in Florida so i have an indoor cage and an out door cage so she can get direct sunlight. She spends the days when im not home in the outdoor cage and when im home she lives on the top of her indoor cage. I only put her in her cage at night.

I try to let her catch some rain which she seems ok with other wise she things she is being murdered at the sight of any other source of water that could contact her.

Over all she is friendly to all people in the house hold and new people. She only likes to be petted at night but will gladly be held at all times of the day by anyone. She could careless about toys of any kind.

She does not speak at all but she does mimic water, cat meow, and puppy barking.

Over all she is super sweet and i just wanted to get some info from anyone that has adopted an african grey from a troubled background.

Should i ever expect her to stop plucking?

Do you think she will ever talk ( i talk to her every day saying good morning and good night and good bird)?

And is there any thing else should do for her.

Hello and welcome to you and Roux! :) It sounds as though she has adapted very well to your home and her new environment. I rehomed Timber at 5 years also. He is not a plucker though, so I can't help there. Others will be along to answer those questions. As to talking, most here agree that you never know about that. They are never too old to learn speech or to start using it, so she could surprise you any time. On the other hand there are greys who will mimic sounds, whistle, etc. but don't say words. My Timber is a closet talker. He rarely uses words when I am in the room. If he doesn't now I'm around or if I am not coming downstairs quickly enough for him, he has a pretty extensive vocabulary. I didn't know how many words he could actually say until I put a cam on him and watched him from work. He would just chatter away. Good luck and God bless!

The diet is excellent. The way she treats mineral stones, blocks is normal. For your living situation, setup is perfect.

Fantastic!!!! You really lucked out!!!!

Many greys don't mimic human language but they do actually speak in their own language and as time goes on, you'll understand what she's saying. In the wild, greys don't imitate human language. I have 3 greys---------1 mimics human language ---2 don't but they all speak parrotese.

I looked at the photo and that's a very minor plucking problem. There's things you can buy but I'll refer you to our threads that deal with plucking and feather care. These threads are all in the Health Room

1---Read about Aloe Vera Juice

2---Read about Aloe Vera Gel

3---Read the post about Chronic and Acute Plucking

Hi Seth, welcome to the Grey family! I have an almost 8 year old TAG I have had since weaned. She is very friendly and can talk but limits herself to asking for food. "Want a nut". My CAG, I have had for about 5 years since he was weaned. He is a big talking and repeats oodles of words he hears. "Feed me, feed me I'm a starving birdie". "Open the door I want to come out." etc., etc. Enjoy your new grey. Give her a chance to get to know you and her new home. Enjoy!

My only concern is you leave her out in an outdoor cage all day during the day. Sounds like a recipe for disaster but your situation and setup may be different than ours. Do you have hawks or those two legged bastards that run around looking for trouble. I won't leave mine unattended as we have neighbors that can see them and they have people over all the time. I fully expect some day they may try and take a pot shot with a pellet gun (you know how pot smoking teenagers are) and that's when 9mm rounds are going down range - but this is Texas. Florida may be different.

Congratulations on adopting Roux and thank you for joining us. We took in an older, multiply rehomed Timneh African Grey, she was in similar shape to Roux with a little plucking. You are doing amazingly well for just bringing Roux home. Miss Gilbert has stuck close to her cage for four years with us and is still really scared to trust us to step up consistently. She still gets nervous and "barbers" her chest feathers but we haven't had any real plucking. As for talking, she may not have had the attachment to her former humans to want to imitate them. Or, it is possible she is waiting to get to know you before she reveals her abilities. Miss Gilbert has learned a few new phrases since she has been with us but every so often she surprises and delights us with phrases she learned along the way. Well... sometimes it isn't so delightful depending on what she learned. Roux is taking everything in, you may just get a big surprise one of these days. Thank you for taking in an older parrot, it looks like you have a gem there.
