Finally He/She Is Home!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Im so excited! I just went to go and pick up my baby yesterday, not sure of gender yet I have to go and get he/she tested.He/she is a 12 week old CAG and loves human company, he/she loves tucking his/her head under my arm and sleeping. Im in love!

How do I teach him/her how to step up? I was told to wait until I clip her nails so he/she can learn how to climb etc. Is this true? His/her nails are so sharp, it hurts! Can anyone give me any tips/advice this is my first baby grey. The breeder says he/she loves oats with purity juice, how do you make that I have tried but she does not seem to like it.

Thank you

Michaela

As for the nails, get a pedicure perch and place it somewhere baby will like to perch like with her food dish. For many birds here that works to take the needle like tip off their talons. Some have to take their birds to a groomer or vet to have them trimmed. If you can, get them used to this while they're babies so it's not a fearful experience. If you have the confidence you can take the very tip off their talon yourself like I can, but you have to be careful because you can' t see where the quick is in their nail so it's easy to draw blood. I did this once about eight years ago and I still feel guilty lol.

is he fully weaned? The breeder should be on call to answer all your questions about food and should have sent baby home with full instructions. Is she on pellets, seed, fresh food? Oats alone is not sufficient. This is the time to expose him to all sorts of new foods while she is accepting of new things. Congratulations on your new flock member. Btw, we love pictures!

Oh so I can get them trimmed as the breeder said wait so she can learn to climb. She she is fully weaned and breeder said she is eating pellets, a few seeds and I have seen pictures of her eating veggies and fruit. I will get her to try many new foods!

She hates it if we go to get her out of her cage she tries to attack (well mainly my mother! Haha) But she leans back and opens up her mouth wide as if she is trying to get food, is she hungry or just scared?

I love her so much! I was laying with her on my bed yesterday and she was tucking her head into my arm and every-time I moved she would come closer. How to I teach her to step up? Do I start right away or wait a couple of days?

Thank you

Michaela

I would not 'trim' their nails as a baby like your breeder mentioned (if I read that right). Even in adult birds trimming, depending on how much of the nail is taken, can result in a little off balance which is easily overcome when they're older. If you can just barely file the points off to where they don't hurt that would be best until baby is a little older and more sure of themselves.

You may have misread what I posted.

There's no need to take the punctures. Just use a simple fingernail file and barely rub off the sharp points. No need to get a nail trimmer and take anything more. A couple of passes with a nail file will make the nails tolerable to handle her and won't affect her balance any.
