Pellet Food

Recommended Posts

After a week of trying hard to switch my grey from seeds to pellet food i finally managed to succeed :-D. I'm currently giving it P15 but i was told that it could make the parrot aggressive. What do you think about harrison feeds and gmbreeder feeds? Any Suggestions?

Thanks,

Et

I give Harrison's High Potency pellets to my grey, she has been them almost her entire life and eats them readily. Some members do not feed any pellets preferring to provide a well balanced diet of vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and other foods so they get the nutrients they need.

I have never heard of pellets making a parrot aggressive, new one on me.

I see this is your first post, why not introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us more about you and your grey.

We feed natural, avoiding pellets as a regular diet as most contain menadione, a toxic synthetic "vitamin." It's a cheap form of vitamin K "activity" and is in all kinds of pet foods from dog and cat to exotics such as monkeys and bird pellets. It's hepatotoxic - damaging to the liver and has been linked in studies to liver tumors. Harrison's does not contain menadione, but does contain peanuts so we use it very rarely. We also feed Goldenfeast Goldn'obles which do not contain menadione. I suspect the theory of making them aggressive may stem from the fact that many have a high soy content and soy is linked to hormonal behaviors. Since we do not feed pellets as a regular diet I have no information on this.

Seeds are not a good diet, per se, but certain nuts and seeds can be a healthy part of a diet that includes fruits and vegetables. A totally seed diet often has only a handful of ingredients and thus does not cover the broad spectrum of nutrients needed for good health (for parrots or humans).

Good luck with your Grey!

Like everything else, everything in moderation makes a balanced diet. My birds get pellets, seed mix. fresh veggies & fruit, pasta, rice, and quinoa. Plus, Nutri-Berries and other treats. Of course, they eat what they want, and often not what I want them to. So, you have to try different things, served different ways, until you find what they like. And just because they eat it today, it does not mean they'll eat it tomorrow. And conversely, what they won't eat today, they might eat tomorrow.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply? Yesterday I bought him http://www.gmbreeders.com/#!fruity-parrots--parakeets/c44s When you say good seeds can you please specify? I read that sunflowwer seeds are very bad... infact thats the most favorite thing that he mostly likes. This bird isn't that keen on vegies / fruit. Banana he hates it just spilts is out, apples in bits them constantly just to destroy it not eat it, corn on the cob just ignores it. The only thing that i've seen him eat was carrots.

Harrisons is a great diet... there are many. Find a great birdstore and they will help you. Of course, they hate fruits and veggies.... Greys are permanent two year olds and spit out fresh healthy food over and over. Focus on the veggies as fruits dont offer the nutrients as the veggies. I do frezedryed thru my birdstore, as well as offer fresh. My bird likes what I am eating, because she always wants what I have! It takes forever to get a bird to eat fruits and veggies.Try birdie bread checkout recipes! We do many tricks to introduce healthy food. Nancy
