reptoman
He everyone! I joined this forum in preparation for getting an African Grey. There is some great information here and I have really enjoyed reading the personal accounts of people interacting with their birds. I am trying to learn as much as I can about the care requirements before getting one. On that topic, there is a show coming to the Dallas area in April and I wanted to know if getting a baby Grey at a show/expo was a good idea or something to be avoided. If anyone has a recommendation for me and my wife to purchase a baby Grey in the Dallas area please let me know. I am excited to get one but do not want to rush it and we are still working out how it would all fit into our daily routine and budget. Thanks! SRSeedBurners
Richardson! Ha...I live just north of you in Allen. GreycieMae says hello and welcome to the forum. The lady we got Greycie from is all sold out! (Murfchck stole Greycie's sister, I'm sure of it). I have my talons pretty deeply entrenched in the local bird scene around here. I'll keep a lookout but I never see any babies, always rescues/rehomes. Feel free to send a pm/email or keep in contact here. I'm always on the lookout for locals. I've found some and then they always just disappear. Don't be one of them
Timbersmom
Hello and welcome reptoman I don't live in that area so can't help you there. In our area, there are some reputable breeders at the bird fairs etc. The best thing to do is do your research on the breeder. Sterling is a great resource for you. Have you considered a rehome instead of a baby? There are some great greys out there needing forever homes. Good luck and God bless!
Greywings
Always room for another Texan, welcome aboard. Smart to look ahead when considering any kind of Parrot. Murfchuck is near you and may know a bit more about the local bird show folks. Look around and get some great ideas on adapting to life with a Grey. murfchck
LOL, I did not steal GreycieMae's sister, boy i wanted to though! Such a cute little butt she had! Lol I know of a few greys in sanctuaries, but no babies are around from any breeders that i am aware of. Check out Wings of Love Bird Haven. De is the founder and is awesome with the birds. I think she has some greys and is located in RedOak, not to far.
Brat Birds
Welcome. I am far from TX so have no help there. But, I did get my baby from a breeder at a bird fair. I can not say this enough - if you have not researched the breeder - do not shop at the fair. Unless you, or a trusted friend, know the breeder it is a roll of the dice. As you might have guessed, I bought from a bad breeder. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't give up my baby for the world, but I now would handle things a bit differently. Do your homework and you will be fine!
judygram
Hello Reptoman and welcome to our family. You have come to the right place to find out all you can about greys for we all live with at least one and the forum is full of stories.
katana600
It's a tough question. Three local vets, after the fact said don't get a bird from a bird fair. They also recommend if you have parrots and frequent a bird fair, shower and change clothes before having contact with your own birds. My baby came from the bird fair, was sick and subsequently died. It may not have been caused by being at the bird fair but it definitely exposed other birds there. Check with your local avian vets and with Texas A&M exotic bird center for private breeders. The less exposure your parrot has to other parrots, the better. Thanks for joining us and for really looking into the facts of adopting a family member. It's a lifelong commitment and worth being sure its what you want. It's also an amazing and worthwhile companionship. We now have a rehomed grey and although it has taken a while for her to get comfortable, she brings us great joy.
reptoman
Thanks for all the responses and the good advice! I will take all that into account when we decide to get one. I am in no rush and would rather get one from a trusted breeder than take my chances.
murfchck
If a baby is the direction you want to go then here is something to think about also, most good breeders have waiting lists. So when you do decide your ready, 9 out of 10 times, you will have to wait months. A local person would be Wendy Craig, would trust her completely! katana600
On the other side of that coin toss of destiny, after we lost our baby we took in his brother with the realization we all have already been exposed. He had some symptoms and we lost him nearly a year later. From there we took in a "bird with issues" from multiple rehomes. Yes, she had some bad habits but also since she had unknown exposures we felt the risk/benefit was balanced. Let me say, she has brought much laughter, conversation and unparalleled delight. There are others who have adopted younger rehomed greys that came in without any issues. Be sure to read and understand about compliant wonderful babies who hit the terrible twos, push every boundary and change loyalties from their favorite person. With all the thoughts and planning, every family, every grey and every blend is unique and wonderful in its own way. It's going to take work and commitment and its going to provide companionship and fun in ways that can't be measured.
