furley
Hi people was wondering about sleep patterns for are grays. I work from 230 pm to 11pm, 3 days a week and till 9 on weekends. My gray has never been put in her cadge at nights and likes to sleep on her perch In my bed room when I get home from work,I usually have the light out by midnight. I leave lights on and music going when i go to work, and sometimes a movie playing so she has something on She has recently started picking her feathers on her neck and I am trying to help her stop doing it,was wondering if I need to get a better sleep schedules for her if I can, I spend as much time with her when I am home and she has it pretty good here,as I do not neglect her. I got a wood stove in here but also a good humidifier, so the humidity is good for her in here. I feel this picking is a stress thing so just wondering if she is getting enough sleep time in the dark, or does it really matter when they sleep? If anyone can way in on this for me I truly appreciate it . Thank you all so much for all your posts and all your love you give are birdy friends here. SRSeedBurners
My opinion only - but I think Greys are very sensitive to being alone. When this topic comes up I always refer to the same story: I bought my Grey at exactly the same time as my manager here at work. Both were handfed babies. - My Grey has my wife at home AND two other birds for when they are 'alone' in the bird room or aviary. - My managers Grey is alone all day with only a tv (and toys). My bird shows no sign of plucking - hoping she stays that way. My managers Grey is a plucker now. We feed them similar, lots of toys, interaction when we're home etc. The big difference is, his bird sits alone during the day. If adjusting her sleep pattern takes more time away from being with you, I personally would not do it. My Grey stays up till 10pm some nights just because she wants to keep playing with me. Luvparrots
How much outside time does your grey get? I'm talking about sunlight time. Not getting enough Vitamin D might be a factor. Misting with Aloe Vera juice is also a good thing to do, my greys love a good misting in the morning so that that they can preen and dry out during the day. Acappella
10 - 12 hours dark sleep time is the ideal for greys. Is your room blackout dark even after the sun rises? That could extend his sleep time into daylight hours. Also, think about keeping the same schedule everyday even when you're not working as much as you can. Around here if Dorian isn't getting his full night of sleep I'm dealing with a cranky birdy after a couple of days.
