This poem was written by a buddy of mine. It touched me alot and I feel that it very fitting that it be shared.

I am obviously no poet .. but with so many birds losing their lives lately, I felt the need to express my feelings somehow. It could have been much longer, there have been so many sad, hurtful stories as of late.

This is dedicated to all the sweet souls at the Bridge whose owners didn't care enough. In some ways, I believe they are all better off at the Bridge than living with careless, unthinking and cruel humans. There are fates worse than death.

I left you today

You took me outside today.

No harness, no cage, no protection.

The dog barked, I got scared, up I went.

My clipped wings taking me high and away.

You knew the risk and gambled with my life.

I left you today.

That Teflon pan you swore was fine.

You’d always be on guard and watch the heat.

The phone rang and you forgot.

Hotter and hotter it got, the fumes deadly.

You knew the risk and gambled with my life.

I left you today.

You thought it was cute, kitty, puppy & me.

They are so much bigger, and I am just prey.

You turned your back, and that was their chance.

I tried so hard to fight, and not be their toy.

You knew the risk, and gambled with my life.

I left you today.

You said I’d be fine, it wasn’t that cold.

Out here in the garage, all on my own.

I got so cold I couldn’t eat.

Weak, alone, unnoticed amongst many.

You knew the risk, and gambled with my life.

I left you today.

They begged and pleaded for me.

Promising to care, promising to feed.

Now they tease and torture me.

Once their dream, I am starved, battered and abused.

You knew the risk, and gambled with my life.

I left you today.

Adina, that buddy of yours must be a bird lover to have written that so accurately, brought tears to my eyes while reading it, thanks so much for sharing it with us.

It left me feeling a little empty !

It takes all kinds to make a world. Not always a good thing.

People that share their life with a parrot can feel that sentiment.

OMG! I have refused to read this thread since you posted, as I can't read any sad stories of a parrot who has been lost or crossed over to the rainbow bridge. Those stories upset me as if that bird was my own. I cant take those emotions, those stories break my heart...but I finally got the nerve to read this today....I LOVED IT. It is sooo true, and your friend is to be commended. I have read of a sad preventable death from everything he stated more times than I can count.

I am making this a sticky, I want everyone to read it and realize how quickly an accident can happen, I am a true believer in most accidents can be prevented if we are diligent enough.

So I was crying and could not reply when I read that. Heartbreaking and beautifully written. My heart goes out to all in need of being rescued and to those who rescue.
