chezron
What, if any, space heaters are safe for use with birds? Electric ones tend to have a bad weird odor and I am sure they are polluting the air. Are there any that are safe?
KimKim
I have these and haven't had any issues with them and Babalu. But I did get him the avitech heat panel so they aren't around his cage anymore. The heat dish will collect dust when not in use and have a burning smell when you turn it on again. My solution is to put it in a trash bag when not in use. http://t.costco.com/Presto®-HeatDish®-Plus-Parabolic-Heater.product.11619443.html http://t.homedepot.com/p/Lasko-23-in-1-500-Watt-Electric-Portable-Digital-Ceramic-Tower-Heater-with-Remote-Control-5160/202295960
Timbersmom
I use this one http://www.amazon.com/Original-SUNHEAT-Electronic-Infrared-Heater/dp/B004TS1V7K/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1388868897&sr=8-3&keywords=sunheat+heater I have had no problems with it and there is no smell. BaileysPapa
When needed, I use ceramic heaters around the birds. Heating coils make too much smoke and burn funny. I've had no problems with the ceramic variety.
Talon
I use infrared heaters, but never leave them on when I'm not home or at night. My furnace goes down to 64 at night, but I would rather my birds be a bit chilly than worry about a fire. The top half of their cages are covered by a sheet. Ray P
I use Eden Pure heaters, I have 3 and if you look at my avatar you will see my girls on one. They are safe around pets and the shell dose not get hot. They have a copper jacket heat exchanger and make a lot of heat for a little money. Timbersmom
The one I posted is an eden pure knock off. Same principal and same type of technology. I love it. It doesn't get hot an works very well. I've had it at least 8 years now, and feel safe leaving it on when I'm away or in bed.
Talon
So, you guys think I can leave my heater on? I have the same type.

murfchck
Mine run all day and night. I have it set at 74 in the birds room. It is the infrared heater, i love it!
chezron
Ordered a quartz infrared heater -- thanks! I have a big house and am only interested in taking the chill off the bird's room (my office/kitchen too) in the coldest months. Most of the time it is a fine temperature, but when it gets down below 59F I get a little concerned. I don't need to heat the whole house. I figure using a space heater very occasionally would save energy costs over heating the whole house. I am new to energy costs. Am I right about that? Talon
I have one I now (thanks to you guys) run at 74 in my bird room. I have a big house and keep my thermostat at 70 when I am home and 67 when I am at work or sleeping. I hate the cold!
Timbersmom
Cost savings depends on the type of heat you have. I don't have the ability to shut off unused rooms or regulate temp by room (hot water, gravity fed system) so the space heater concept saves me a lot of money. The only way I can think of that it might not save money is if you have electric baseboard heat and can regulate on a room-to-room basis.

Grey11
Does it matter the brand, I was thinking of getting a life smart infrared heater at HSN?
Timbersmom
No, brand doesn't matter. Mine is actually branded "Sunheat"
chezron
I have one called Dr. Heater. I had a conversation with a guy from the company that makes it to make sure there was no teflon used in the heating elements.
Muse
We went with Holmes because they actually state this on their website: http://www.holmesproducts.com/service-%26-support/product-support/product-faqs/heaters/general-information/heaters-general-faq.html "Are any Holmes® heaters made with non-stick coatings as these materials can be dangerous to pets? No. Holmes® heaters are not made from these materials."
