Looking for new African Grey to add to our family, NJ/NY area

Searching the internet has led me here and has also led me to believe that these beautiful birds might be too much for our family to afford. We are a family of 4 and my wife is a stay at home. We are all animal lovers and have fell in love with the African Grey species.

The grey would be so well taken care of in our family. Does anyone know where in the area we might be able to find or adapt one without paying retail?

any help would be appreciated.

Have you considered rehoming an adult bird? There are lots of birds in sanctuaries in need of a home. You may want to contact some of the organizations in your area: Maars.org.

Occasionally people signup here just to see if they can find someone to take a bird they need to rehome and don't want to just craigslist the bird. Hang around long enough one of those will pop up. There's one recently.

I would just like to point out that not only are grey's expensive to buy, they are expensive to keep. The cost of the proper food, toys, vet bills etc. is more than I expected and is quite high. I'm not trying to discourage you, but you need to take that into consideration when budgeting too.

thank you for the advice. my family and I are animal lovers. We have 2 dogs, 3 fish tanks, and 2 geckos. We are fully committed to providing the best love and care. We already have our family vet for our dogs and have always provided our pets with the best food, care and attention. I appreciate your concern and understand being an african grey lover that you only want the best as well.

I know the thread is a bit stale, but I would also like to point out that board-certified avian vets seem to be far more expensive that regular vets. Our vet for the furries charged about half what one avian (as well as other animal) vet charged. Our other avian specialist vet was even more expensive. Since we moved, I found a place that falls about in the middle of our two previous avian vets (and with EXCELLENT care). However, most all of them have Care Credit signs in their lobbies (all three I have been to do) and take all major credit cards. AMEX loves my birds, I am very sure.

I just spent about $400 on the budgie through the course of a bacterial respiratory infection. Thank God no one else caught it. Mar and Meg are due for a yearly with blood work and I am not looking forward to that bill, but it's got to be done. Maks isn't due for a while because he had a bout of illness and had his pedigree read while he was sick, so he is ahead of everyone else. Alex and the four Green Cheeks will be due in summer. But I just keep telling myself, at least I don't have to pay for college or weddings!
