amanda1030
So I have been wanting to take home a grey ever since I was a kid, but had to wait until I had the time and means to do so. I have done my research and am prepared for the commitment and know what it takes to own one of these birds! I have decided I want a Timneh grey, and I have the option to take one home who is 8 months old. Is this considered an older bird that would be more difficult to adapt to a new home? Would perhaps a slightly younger grey be easier and more readily adjust to its new environment? Any advice would help! Thanks.
Timbersmom
Hello and welcome Amanda! I would think an 8 month old is still a baby. Someone with more experience will probably have more to say
SRSeedBurners
I read somewhere that even older, when the bird is naturally ready to part ways and find new beginnings is the best time to get a grey. What age that was slips by me but I seem to recall it was older than 'months' - so maybe it was a year or so. Maybe even just on the other side of the terrible twos? Either way, mine is 11mos and she's still exhibiting baby behavior but also showing new adult behaviors as well. I think as long as the Grey hasn't been mishandled you shouldn't have any excess baggage.

They're all considered babies. There's no effect on training, temperment, general friendliness, playfulness. A grey is considered an adolescent when it turns to 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 yrs old. Cosmos_Friend
By all means, go get your Grey! I took Cosmo, (my CAG) home at 13 weeks, he's 6 years old now and a captivating sweetheart. It does take time and a lot of patience for you and your Grey to gain each others trust so when you do get a Grey, take things slow. We'd love to see pictures of your TAG when he/she settles in. You've made the right move in joining us at grey forums. Some of the things I've read about how to handle and care for a Grey were bogus. ~Rick
