Baby Bat

We found a baby (?) bat hiding near our deck door. He chomped down on a stick and wouldn't let go. He was scared and stuck out his wings to make himself bigger. We moved him to a safer location.

Bats are interesting creatures (to me anyway). Hope he makes it!

Might be a good idea to call Animal Control because this little one may need some help. If it is a grounded baby, they'll hopefully know how best to reunite it w/mom so it doesn't starve or get eaten. They may also know a sanctuary if that isn't doable.

 

The other real possibility is that the poor baby is sick. Bats, like all mammals can carry rabies. So it would be important to keep your distance until you can get a professional involved.

Birdhouse is right. It is not normal to find a grounded bat unless something is amiss. Animal control will respond if you call them.

Thanks for the advice. Didn't even think of animal control. After it got dark last night, about 2 hours after we found it, we looked for it and it was gone.
