I spent many years living in Hong Kong and when I was learning cantonese I loved learning the names of animals because the direct translations can be so funny. Ying Mo is 'talking bird' not a funny one but I liked it.

other merlin was originally named simon in his previous home. i try to avoid names with the "s" sound in them because it sounds so hissy.

i thought AGs seem to be able to see the past, present & future so big daddy and i thought merlin was the appropriate name for our little fellow.

We chose the name "Kipusa". Its Swahili for "pretty girl". We thought it would be fun to give her a name from one of the languages spoken in her homeland. We call her "Kip" for short, and "Ruby" is her nickname for the ruby red tail. :P She likes to say "Kip Kip Kip Kip Kip...Kipusa!"

Liath is the Irish word for grey (pronounced Leah) and Oisin (Usheen) is the name of the breeders son. It is also the name of the prince of Tir na nOg (land of youth). As a Grey is permanently 4 years old mentally, I thought it was apt!

This is so fun, finding out how everyone named their greys. My grey named himself - sort of. I looked up African names and my husband joked about Kunta Kintae which I thought was too long. Then maybe Rafiki...and a few others I can't remember now but we were talking about the names in front of the bird and we threw out the name "cookie" and he went crazy excited. This happened numerous times over about half an hour when we got to the name cookie so we decided his name would be Cookie. He was just weaned so I don't think he had a connection with that word yet.

Dorian came to me with his name. I don't know if it's a common name for a grey, but as I love the story by Oscar Wilde and the idea behind it, I like the name. Good thing, as he loves saying his own name over and over (and over. . .) again!

We got Radar about 5 years ago, since he was an older fella we never even considered changing his name. Because of his age (around 30), he was most likely named after the M*A*S*H* character.

Sounds like the way he got excited, he may very well have known what a cookie was. :silly:

Bake some fresh cookies and see if he starts screaming (((COOKIE....COOKIE))) :woohoo:
