NewBird Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Hi all, Got a question about storing food. I keep Loki's (pelleted-mix) food in clear tupperware containers that I store under his cage. This morning I noticed 2 tiny moths in there - eww. This is the 2nd time I've noticed this?!?!?! I keep his room & cage super clean and the lids to the containers are secure. I don't understand why I keep finding bugs. It skeeves me out and I end up tossing (and wasting) the food. Any suggestions?
Wingy Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Put the food in the freezer for at least 2 weeks. That generally kills any eggs that have hitched a ride home in the bag. A determined bug can get into tuperware. I use recycled glass pickle jars (the huge ones from a restaurant/deli) with a good fitting screw on lid for pellets. I use quart mason jars that I seal with a heated canning flat and my foodsaver for seed. (This is a great way to reuse canning flats).
Talon Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 I store all my bird food in the fridge, Not the freezer. Never have a moth, they can't survive or hatch in the cold.
