KatB Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Hello, all-- I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm about to ask a really dumb question, but I can't find an answer anywhere on the internet so here goes... is it normal for a grey (timneh, if that makes a difference) to have a hole--more like a tunnel-- in the lower mandible where it attaches to the throat? You can't really see it in this photo, but it illustrates the point where I'm seeing the hole. When he stretches his neck you can look straight through the hole up to the skin of the throat. The bone of the lower mandible is at least 1/4 inch away from the throat when he stretches like that... Since this guy is a rescue, I'm on the lookout for possible signs of "special needs". Thanks! KatB
Dave007 Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 """"""""is it normal for a grey (timneh, if that makes a difference) to have a hole--more like a tunnel-- in the lower mandible where it attaches to the throat? """" Absolutely normal{Feel-good-000200BB}. All grey, CAGs and TAGs have that opening. there would be a problem if they didn't have it.
KatB Posted October 9, 2007 Author Posted October 9, 2007 Thanks, Dave! I've been worried about it, but at the same time a little embarrassed to ask  So much to learn!
lovemyGreys Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 KatB There is no such thing as a " Dumb Question " if you need to know something you just ask away, That's what we are all here for
KatB Posted October 9, 2007 Author Posted October 9, 2007 You know, loveMyGreys, you might just come to regret that open invitation
Guest briansmum Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 what i want to know is how you got a picture at that angle? if i approached my guy like that the lense would obscured by beak pretty quick
KatB Posted October 9, 2007 Author Posted October 9, 2007 Ha! He was on his play gym, and lemme tell you it took more than one attempt!
BMustee Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I would for sure have a picture of the INSIDE of the beak...LOL That "tunnel" area is actually one of my greys favorite spots for scratches.
LunaBaby Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 In case someone doesn't know and wants to, it's called the interramal region or interramal space. It's where the tongue is =)
KatB Posted October 10, 2007 Author Posted October 10, 2007 Good to know -- both the name for it and the hint to scratch it. Ollie and I will have to try that out if he's in a good mood tonight
Guest briansmum Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 i didn't know the proper name thanks luna. but there'll be no sratches there thankyou very much mummy!
judygram Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Aww go ahead Beccy and try it, you never know he might just like it.
BMustee Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 It is good to know the name...once I was thinking about it I was like "ummm, ok, what the heck is that?"
