Hi,

I am new to the forum. We just got an older African Grey Timneh Parrot (Cookie). His/her has a bad eye, and can't fly according to the vet that we took it too. it is missing 2 toe nails, vet said probably got bit off, and on it's right leg its back finger is bent around backwards. Ours only uses 1 toe in the back cause the other is in the front stuck (tight). Walks fine though. not sure it it's arthritis?

Thanks, sounds like you have a wonderful Grey. If your companion gets around the cage etc good, don' worry. You need to go to Avian vet where they can test for arthritis, it sounds more like a deformity. Feed a good diet and please keep us informed.......Thanks Jayd

If your bird does have arthritis, there's nothing you can do about it, but from what you described your bird doesn't fit most symtoms of arthritis. You should focus on his other problems such as not being to manuver or fly very well. A bird that has the same description of your bird's feet should be given loads of branch type perches--all thicknesses and bent in various directions. They can be purchased but can also be found by finding dead trees and using those branches. Dowel perches aren't good for a bird that has toes or claws missing or aren't growing in the right direction. A change of diet won't help anything. A change in the size of the cage won't help anything. Your bird has disabled feet and the various branches will tone the muscles in the legs and feet which is impotant for a bird that has to stay in or by the cage all the time.

Thanks for the comments all! But, the Avian vet said he may have arthritis. Doctor said about the eye: Her lens is in front of her Iris and she can't see. Doctor said she injured her wing web and it is thickened and shortened.

How nice to see that Cookie is willing to have human contact, her attitude is certainly remarkable. We have an older rehomed Timneh too. He is not able to fly, but without any other physical constraints, he still doesn't want to go far from his cage nor to sit with us. His balance isn't great. He does seem to prefer rope perches with wire inside that we can bend and secure to both sides of his cage. We do also have wooden branch perches in lots of different sizes and placed them so he can easily step from one to the next to get anywhere in his cage. Cookie is going to reward you in many many ways for taking the time to care for her and help her live up to her potential.

hi, well done for taking on such a bird that many would walk past. We too recently recued a disabled CAG and I came to this forum for help. We have discovered that ours manages better with shelves rather than normal perches, and have added several into his cage to help him. hope this helps and good luck x
