Hi everyone,

I am a new member and wanted to say hi and tell you about me. I have been around parrots all my life, My grandparents raised and showed prize winning budgies back in the 50's and 60's and of course I had a budgie. Later when I was married I had a couple budgies and then in 98 got my first large parrot -an congo grey names Ashes. Ashes is a very talented talker and a great bird(though she can be feisty at times!) She had none of the problems that I often read

African greys had and has grown to be a very confident bird that loves everyone(especially favors my hubby though) and is a fabulous flying machine. After her we got a blue and gold macaw and fell in love with the macaws as well. At the tiem we lived in the Chicago area and have since moved to Gainesville, Florida. Here we have managed to rehome 6 more birds, 3 blue and gold macaws, one greenwing and most recently a scarlet. Last March i got a call from a woman who had an african grey that she had rescued two years earlier from a neglectful, possible abusive situation. She had worked with the bird for 2 years, apparently with a lot of phobias, bumblefoot and malnutrition but was now in a long term situation that required her to be away many hours a day several days a week and wanted me to take him in. He is wonderful. He had come a long way apparently because he has been the sweetest and most gentle bird imagineable. He has never bitten me or used bad language(apparently traits he had previously) and really bonded to me. He is not comfortable around strangers like Ashes is and has a mighty mean growl, and he is still a bir fearful of left arms(he won't step up and is very nervous) but is learning to fly much better(at first he crashed into things) and has really blossomed. He and Ashes are starting to interact finally. Up until recently they just sort of watched each other.

I live in the country and have besides my parrots, 5 german shepherds and 9 goats. And a pond with koi and a tropical fish aquarium, that the birds love to watch. I hope to learn new things and to share some of my knowledge with the group. I am currently learning and working on foraging trees and toys. We have an outdoor aviary for macaws and one for the greys, as well as a big birdroom. They all love their playtime outside. Good to be here . sorry if this is so long.

wavinghand.gif Welcome Angie!!

Wow, thanks for the great introduction you posted. You have a huge Flock there and a wide variety of Parrots and other critters. It sounds like a wonderful place to pass away the hours in enjoyment of a tropical forest type setting and just take in all the sights. :-)

We'll look forward to hearing much more from you regarding your experiences, funny stories and of course photos...we love them :-)

Again, WELCOME!!!!

Hello and welcome to the family, Angie, we are glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more from you and your flock. And you do have some flock, what with 2 greys, 4 B&G macaws, a greenwing macaw and a scarlet macaw. Wow you do have some large birds with those macaws.

I commend you for taking in the second grey and am glad that both of your greys may get along, most of the time they won’t, but you must be doing something right and I am sure with your experience with parrots they both will flourish under your care.

I usually suggest new members read thru our many threads here on various topics for lots of useful information but it looks like you may know more than we do at this point, so don’t be surprised if we pick your brain for ideas and suggestions.

We would love to see pictures of all of your flock, especially the greys, if you have some you would like to share with us we would be more than happy.

I am sure you have plenty of stories to tell, having that many birds, we would love to hear some of them if you would like to share some of them with us.:)

Hi everyone and thank you for the warm welcome. I do have a lot to keep me busy here and only a little time for the computer but I am in the process of transferring a lot of my photos to photobucket albums and will send a link once I get them in albums. I love photographing my animals and my gardens. In the meantime I do have a little web site you can check out, www.hometown.aol.com/parrotpal123/sanctuary.html

While I am not an official "501" sanctuary as we fund all the expenses here ourselves, I do try to help birds needing homes find them We take in mainly macaws but I have helped rehome everything from budgies to cockatoos to amazons here in this area. It is very rewarding to know that I am helping a bird to a better life. I also am working on some programs with an individual who does a lot of educational programs about the rain forests and am looking forward to having an oppurtunity to educate people about parrots. Thanks again...

Thanks for posting your website AngieK!!

The outdoor Aviary is awesome along with your indoor room also. It looks like a great place for all the Parrots. :-)

I noted that you are avian certified and a behavioural and nutrition specialist.

It would be great if you could help us out here, when you see the need. :-)

Very impressive work and credentials, to say the least.

The aviary really is awesome -that picture is old on the website -as you can see i have not updated since we got Manji and Chiquita and we now have the aviary fully planted inside and out and have added a smaller aviary for the greys to hang out in. My husband and I did the whole thing ourselves and it was a lot of work -but really worth it. I have noticed that some folks have posted photos in their posts and wondered how that is done - I will send some more current pictures then. Otherwise I will have some posted on my photobucket site soon.
