aw64
This is just a quick one is it safe to give broad beans complete, raw straight off the plant washed first?
Jayd
"CAUTION:Large beans: Anasazi, Black, Fava,[broad beans] Kidney, Lima, Navy, Pinto, Soy, are not suggested for sprouting. These legumes can cause toxicity and remain difficult to digest. Their raw flavor is also very bad. If you choose to serve these to your bird they MUST be soaked for a minimum of 8 hours, water drained and beans rinsed well, and then cooked by bringing them to a full boil, boiling uncovered for 10 minutes, covered and simmered for another 20 minutes." SRSeedBurners
Digging up an older thread here, but Jay, do you know if sprouted lime beans are ok after cooked in the above manner? I managed to sprout some lima beans and was going to feed them but decided to check first and found they are considered poisonous once sprouted. Seems to be some conflicting info on these. Jayd
Doing so would defeat the purpose of sprouting. I recommend to err on the safe side and don't do this. Heat and cooking renders the bean safe, but what nutrition remains left in the bean after doing so? There's too many safe beans that are easy to sprout. Remember, A short tail, 1/8-1/4 inch provides the most nutrients and best flavor. You would be surprised at the gems of knowledge you can find in our archives. danmcq
Spout seeds from your seed mix, if you wish to sprout. Beans, as Jay said always cook properly.
