murfchck
The dawn came from two vets when i was asking about his previous owners giving him baths with it. One said safe, the other said as Greywings said, not as an everytime bath, maybe once a month. Both said just a few drops in a tub full of water. They get aloe mists after baths. It is Bongo, my fully feathered grey that doesn't get wet. We even noticed that his leg feathers don't get wet when he stands in water, really weird to me! Bubba is lump free!!! Nothing in his bumm, nice and pink and all healed up. ( well till he put his finger up there today, little irritated tonight ) He goes back in two weeks just for a follow up! Dr Moore was very happy with his progress as are we! ( i actually have not spoken to Dr Moore about the dawn, one vet is my mother in laws and the other was dr clark who saw bongo ) Heehee, the dust bath wouldn't work in our yard, my kitty goes out to potty and she would use that. Cool idea though! Edited September 19, 2012 by murfchck
birdhouse
Oops, sorry. I knew it was a matter of time before I messed up. Yay for Bubba!!!!!!!!!!!! Great news!!!!!!!!!! How did he behave for Pat at the vet? Too bad about the dust bath. I'd love to know if they'd use it. I always wondered if it would be a good alternative since greys are notoriously difficult to bathe. But most of us don't have any way to make it work. murfchck
99.9% of the stress for me now with taking Bubba to the vet was getting him into the travel cage so we ended up making a deal, if he would get him in it, i would take him, lol. He did great getting in and the girls at the office said they were going to miss him next week, that he is just so sweet. I guess they keep him out during the day while they have him, he has them wrapped around his talon!

Timbersmom
Good news from the vet! So glad to hear Bubba is over that "hump" or bump as the case may be
murfchck
Bubba seems to be opening up more now than he ever has. Around 4 every afternoon he starts talking, hello, pretty bird, i love, dog barking, go, Pat, bye, la la la, clucking like a chicken and making monkey noises for HOURS! Oliver tried the clucking yesterday, he will get it in time. He has mastered the macaw aarrrkkk sound so he does that with every word Bubba says. Then Gabby starts in with them, hello over and over with a few whistles in between. Then Bongo joins in with his whisting and dog whining and barking. By 6 pm i am ready for the rubber room my hubby said he would make for me! He better hurry with that or he will come home one day to find me in a corner repeating hello, hello, hello over and over! Timbersmom
Remind him to put in a perch so you can do the bat hang with the slippers... Isn't it great to hear them all acting healthy and lively though? Sounds great!
Wingy
I hear you on the over and over and over part. Jake about drove me crazy with the meow he learned from the cat. I have started redirecting him with music. Whistle While You Work and the Silly Song from Disney's Snow White have so many sounds going on that Jake focuses on singing along instead of the annoying meow. Heck I bet Star Wars would be a fun movie to put in with all of them.

murfchck
Welper, got another bite yesterday. We had them outside and Bubba climbed up a wall and couldn't get back down. He raised his foot for me to pick him up so i did, as i was turning to set him back down he latched on my thumb and started grinding. Having a disagreement now with hubby bc he was there and says i am not reading him correctly. Lol really so the foot up means come here and let me bite you now? Hmm, when did that universal language change? Now, don't get me wrong, he was stressed a bit bc he couldn't get down from the wall, so i am not really upset with him, we just need to figure out how to change his stress from biting to something less painful! katana600
If your hubby is anything like mine, he is the expert at reading you and stepping back to let go first. LOL. I love him with no bounds, but some things don't change. In this case, Bubba may have gotten more and more frustrated by hanging out on the wall if you had waited longer for an opportunity to help him down. Too bad he took it out on your poor thumb though. As time goes on Bubba will get more resilient and able to have a little more control when he is upset, but that is little consolation for you today. I am the first to admit that sometimes it takes a little while to get past the sting of an assault on my good intentions.

Lol Jake has picked up some of the R2D2 sounds after hearing about 20 minutes of the movie. I have always liked the first 3 of the released movies so I think its cute. murfchck
I think Gabby would pick it up then teach the others, then our home could become a movie called Parrot Wars! Lol I never noticed how many cop shows i watch like Criminal Minds, Cold Case and Bones until Bongo started doing their police sirens. Yikes! Add that to the girl scream that Bubba taught him and now my house is like another tv show, Criminal Parrots! I gotta say this morning when i got Bubba out to bring him to his stand i was scared to death. I tried to play it cool but by the time we got to his stand my entire body was shaking and there was heat flush from head to toe. But i did it! I am thinking pretty hard about biting the big one and giving up food to afford medical insurance again! Lol
Wingy
Would wrapping your fingers in vet wrap help? Perhaps using a step up perch? These aren't useful in an emergency but will let you heal psychologically.
murfchck
The step up perch is how he got my thumb the first time. He stepped right up then ran right down it and grabbed hold. I will get over it, the fear that is. Hubby asked why he doesn't get bit like i do, it is simple, i handle him more than he does. Odds are i would have more wounds. Then his little girl, Gabby, bit him about an hour later. She has bit me twice that has really hurt, him about 10 times easy because he handles her much more than i do. He then understood the answer to his question, why?! Lol Her little grey bites are more painful than Bubbas, she has a thick needle for a beak, each time she has pierced my skin i get a knot under my skin. Bubba just bites and he could do way more damage than he ever has but actually can control himself some. I mean he could have removed my thumb both times but he hasn't even broken a bone in there. I feel these have been just a warning bite, which i heed! I found a huge double macaw cage on CL we are going to go look at today. I am not sure about it bc these two get aggressive when they are together. It is divided but still... Eh, we'll see i guess. Lol
katana600
There is something about a fear bite when you are doing something new, or when you are helping them that seems easier to overcome in my mind than when I get a swipe seemingly from out of nowhere without the slightest insight of forewarning or an obvious external motivator. I try to think if it has something to do with my approach but more often than not, it just boils down to proximity and opportunity for Gilbert. I honestly have not been bitten hard more than two or three times in eighteen months, but it still is a fresh memory. Another thing I have noticed is the people who are near him least often, never feed or care for him get a courtesy flick or a pinch whereas he has nailed me to the bone with his pointy little beak. I understand it is all part of the learning process but I have to admit I have wanted to bite him back sometimes. LOL. I have faith that some day far in the future, I will forget what it felt like to endure a wicked bite, and then he will surprise me all over again. I am real proud of you for moving past the fear of Bubba's bite to keep on keeping on and loving him and striving for something better.
murfchck
I had him today on my hand and we went for a trot around the room making our weird motor boat sounds as he pretends to fly, so all is good with us. Gabby flew to my shoulder tonight and i had to get Pat to come remove her from my earring in my ear. When he did, Bubba started yelling loudly, "What happened? " It was really funny, i was on the phone and the person i was talking to was laughing so hard. Bubba kept asking so Pat is explaining to him what Gabby did and after the second explanation Bubba just started yelling something we couldn't understand but he was sure scolding Gabby in full sentences. The woman on the phone could only say my, my, my.
Greywings
Glad you heal well, I got a bite Saturday form an very happy enthusiastic Too at the Sanctuary who hates the drill we use to undo and remount her water bottle. Each side of my ring finger nail and it bled well, I though those fingers were clear but oops. Other than that she is a cuddle bug. I think Gabby is well named for sure. How many of us have birds that yell "Come here!" and mean just that I wonder.

How many of us have birds that yell "Come here!" and mean just that I wonder. Yikes! My brother was bitten by a Moluccan - clear through the skin between the thumb and forefinger. Burt yells, "Burt, step up...NO! NO! BAD!" (which may explain why he doesn't step up for me), and recently he's been saying "Naughty Bird!" which is also something I've never said. The hoarding house he came from must have been a real hoot.
Timbersmom
That is so sad. Like adopting a child, you just never know everything they were exposed to. murfchck
I have no doubt that Burt will over come this, after all he has you guiding him! It is sad to hear things birds bring with them. Bubba has started saying Shut up, which is something we do not say here, hush maybe, but i think how many times did he hear that said to be able to repeat it so clearly. We are luck, knock on wood, they said he knows cuss words but we have not heard that. I mean, i am no angel but i am 44 and he is seven, if i go before him, i wouldn't want anyone hearing that! I live by the "never say anything in front of your parrot that you wouldn't mind your neighbors knowing" rule!
Timbersmom
That's a good rule of thumb to live by. I'm not that prim and proper myself, but I don't find foul language from birds or children amusing (not since I was about 16 at any rate).
