Vitamins....?

So this weekend my gf who has been bragging that she found a NEW petstore that was a mom/pop shop like the one I got Marco from and it was so awesome in there and they were so friendly yadda yadda but best of all it was CLOSER couldnt wait to take me there! So I was excited to have her show me where it was on Saturday. Needless to say, I drove by it at first becuz it looked like an abandoned plant nursery with huge overgrown weeds and dead trees in the front. My heart sorta sank but I still went in ....

Needless to say I was NOT NOT NOT impressed by any means!!!!! OH GOD. It just really wow was not what I had invisioned. It did look like they moved into this old plant nursery, it was dirty at best messy totally I was horrified when I went into the back where their birds for sale were and it was so hot in there i began to sweat and saw the huge Red Macaws that were in there (house birds) were panting like dogs!

I noticed maybe about 20 toys for sale, nothing that I would of bought tho. Nothing impressed me at ALL! But here in is my question ....the guy was asking me what kinda bird I had etc etc .... So I explained to him I had a 7mo old grey and course then he asked me what I had her on... I said well I kept her on the same diet she was weened on which was zupreem pellets and a seed mix available all the time, with the fresh vege's morning/night etc. I saw that they stocked NOTHING from Zupreem or Harrisons or anything like that. He only had HIS seed mix in what looked like a cooler youd see at a florist shop.

He course scouffed at me and said "He made his own seed with vitamins":confused: I wasnt sure what that meant "with vitamins" and then I found out that my GF put vitamin drops in her birds water and she has a pineapple conure (or something like that) ....

Soooooooooo now Im all freaked out that I should be looking into vitamins for Marco??

no. from what you put in your post of what you feed Marco you are doing fine. dont worry Marco is in good hands and you are doing the right thing.

PS tell your GF to stay away from that guy.

Carl is right, if you are feeding Marco a well rounded diet then additional vitamins are not needed, only give if your avain vet recommends them as too much can be harmful in itself.

Those poor birds, maybe someone needs to educate this man on the proper care of parrots.

Smiles ty so much for responding .... I dont mean to criticize the way other people raise/feed their pets. I just was leary when he said that he put "vitamins" in his seed mix that he sold. I knew that I try really hard to get Marco a nice mix of veges and greens and stuff daily to keep her at the best health possible. Just didnt know if there was more I needed to do!

Wow. Sounds like awful store. There is a store in my area that sells only their "enriched" seed and nothing else. The owner is a bit fanatical that his diet is the best. Needless to say, I steer clear!

My suggestion for Harrison's is to buy it direct from their website. The prices are fair and shipping is fast. Since it's *mostly* organic you want it fresh as possible. In a store it can sit for months on a shelf, or kept at improper temperatures. To keep my fresh I always reseal the bag and keep it in the fridge.

There's nothing better than a well rounded diet. I do add supplements in the form of flax and hemp powder - in very small amounts.

well I really do try to give her as best as I can and I too keep any additional seeds/pellets in the fridge/freezer so it stays as fresh as possible! she really likes both of her pellets and seeds so a bowl is only lasting about 2 days :D heck she even really likes her fresh veges shes a pretty good eater!

Parrots are scavengers. The basic all around diet for parrots --different veggies, as green as possible, some human type foods plus a decent parrot mix and if a bird likes them then pellets. Pellets aren't important though. Many people are told to give pellets but many times, they go stale and have artifical ingredients in them. Some people think they're great but others don't. Personally, I don't find them important but that's just the way I feel. People try to replace parrot seed with pellets. I don't think it's very important to do this. I have birds that hate pellets and there's no problems.

Additives like vitamins should never be added because they mess up water and other food that vitamins are put on. If vitamins are needed a vet is the one to recommend it and instructions are given as how to use them. Just beause a pet store sells them, it doesn't mean that they're good for the birds. Pet stores sell lots of things that aren,t good for birds. A grey needs a basic parrot mix in his cage 24/7 because they eat all day long. There is no breakfast , lunch or supper.

The person who started this thread was upset when the owner of a new pet store said that he added vitamins to his seed mixture and she did the right thing to avoid that food.

BTW, you still haven't told us whether you have a grey or not??
