Moddy
My grey is still having "eating disorders" as I call them, he picks out the good parts of his food.. or well the parts that's good for him, the big chunks like what comes in zupreem, so this last trip to the store I got him little conjure parrot food which is pratically all seed and he won't take viatamins either.. Wondering what I should do. He won't eat any fruits besides grapes and I haven't really tried plums yet.. I think i've pretty much tried everything else.. Well not pineapple but he does like the fruit melody that comes in cans. He doesn't really like any veggies.. Like carrots, lettuce, Wow suddenly I can't name veggies.. Cubcumbers, tomatos.. Thoes are what i've tried so far besides peppers and things I don't give him much of dinner foods anymore because I want him to eat the good stuff but I found out my dad's been sneeking him pizza, cheeze its and cheesy bread behind my back -__- and I know if he keeps eating like that he'll never give the good stuff a try. The only snack he get's that he LOVES are un cooked weat noodles.. Suggestions? edited by: Moddy, at: 2007/10/03 11:
judygram
Well the wheat noodles are good but all that cheese and such is not so good in excess and it sounds like it is. There are a lot of different veggies and ways to fix them, maybe you will find a particular way he will give them a try. Try offering him some baby food veggies. Get one of those bird skewers and put all kinds of veggies and fruits on it and hang it in the cage for snacking on. He should be on some kind of pellets, Harrisons is the best but most any kind will do and if he refuses them, try soaking some in apple juice or similar liquid to try to intice him to eat them. Good luck.
BMustee
It took a few tries but I found that my picky eater likes the plain Exact pellets for parrots...mine does not like the fruit pellets. As for the veggies and such, have you tried eating them in front of him because it seems that you Grey wants pizza and such and I'm sure he sees people eating that. Thats how I got mine to eat the good stuff...make him think that it's what you want. Anything that goes in my mouth the Grey can't wait to get into his. loviechick
I would suggest instead of giving him just straight fruits and veggies, try giving him a "mush" mix if you're not already. Mix the fruit and veggies in with that. More often than not since its the consistency of oatmeal they can't "pick out" and toss the stuff the y don't like they have to basically taste more things in there. I've noticed my Greys have learned to like more foods because of me secretly adding stuff to their mix. I don't know if it would sound creepy or not, but I live pretty close to you, you could come over and see what I'm talking about, or call me if you wish! Makena
After many trials we found out Makena's favorite foods are peas and papaya. So we give him a pea/papaya mixture and add other things to it. Soon he was eating everything we were adding into the mix! In fact, I just gave him a big bowl of papaya, bell peppers and tomatoes. He immediately ate out all the papaya then started in on the other stuff. If I give him peppers and tomatoes alone for some reason he isn't interested in it:silly:! Who knows! Same thing goes for pellets. We give him a Harrisons/Exact blend. He eats all the red ones out first (from the exact blend), then goes to town on the rest of it! If you look in the bowl at 10am there are no red ones left. If you look in later in the afternoon, practically the whole bowl is empty. All birds seem to be picky/strange eaters. I guess once you find something that works stick with it, until he gets sick of that and then you have to start all over again :silly: :silly: :silly:!!! You will find something... just keep trying! Do try papaya though if you haven't already. I don't know what it is but Makena is OBSESSED with it! Luckily we live in Hawaii or we might have a hard time feeding his habit:laugh:

eve
For the pellets, aong with mixing some into his regular mix you can also try putting a bowl of jyst pellets up near his favorite roosting perch. May sound simple enough, but I switched my 6 year old seed eater onto pellets in a week this way, and I know lots of people who have similar success. Maybe cause they nibble at night, or just take a nibble in between playing cause they are lazy and don't want to go down to the other food. Just make sure that you don't take away the seeds too early, that he is eating enough pellets before doin so. Another thing that worked well for me, was eating foods in front of them and not wanting to share. Just eat and when they seem interested, just pretend like you don't want to share for awhile (tried this after they tossed down food that I was eating that I offered so took it a step further). Pretending that I do not want to share gets them super interested and they will usually give it a try. Good luck, just don't give up! You can also try making a "toy" out of healthy fresh food, like on a skewer kabob thing. My guys will only eat their leafy greens if served like this... never touched them in a bowl. kiwibarb12
If he won't eat pellets buy a coffee bean grinder (can get for about $20) and grind the pellets then mix with apple juice or apple sauce or baby food to a semi sloppy mix. Beckette likes cashews and sesame seeds so I sprinkle them over the top so she eats what she likes and accidentally eats the rest. Since I have started doing this, she is eating a lot of different things just because she accidentally tried them.
kiwibarb12
Oh, I also warm it up a bit - hoping maybe she will have flashbacks to baby hood.
siobha9
This works.... I had tried unsuccessfully to get Liath to eat Zupreem. I just ground them and added apple juice and she wolfed it down. Granted I fed her at first from a spoon, and then just let her loose on the bowl. Thank you SO much, I really wanted her to eat pellets but I had given up after about 4 weeks trying with whole pellets. Obviously I will leave her with her dry mix for a while until I am sure she is eating enough. Thank you thank you thank you Siobhan
