Hi all.. we are a proud owner of a newly adopted African Grey Buddy... he is 10 and we saved him from a home that was not fit for birds.. we have had him for a week now but have to say he is quite quiet.. is that normal or does it take him some time before he opens up.. we allow him to come out and play and are feeding him plenty of greens and fruits. he is a gentle boy and just seems to be taking everything in.. the people before told us he talks alot.. but havent seen that yet!

Welcome! This is a great place to get info and support as you and Buddy adjust and begin to trust each other. One week is not very much time at all. It sounds like he is coming around nicely already. We would love to see pictures and look forward to hearing how things progress.

Hi carolinn731 and Buddy. Welcome to the grey forum.

To save a grey is awesome.

Give your new companion time to settle in to his new home and family and he will start talking again.

Give him love and he will change your life.

Welcome and thanks for taking in a Grey in need of a good and loving home. At 10 years old he he very mature and probably of a lot of unknown history.

It sounds like you already know it is just going to take a lot of patience and love while making him feel comfortable and safe in his totally new surroundings, family and possibly even other pets and parrots in the home. We have a very broad and diverse range of experienced parrot owners on this forum that are always more than happy to help or just have idea's bounced off them when needed. :)

Hi Carolinn, congratulations on your new companion. He is lucky to have found you! I am really looking forward to watching him open up to you. Just relax and let Buddy take the lead and get to know you and your family care. If he is a talker, it will come when he really understands that he is safe in his forever home. Welcome to the Grey family!

Hello Carolinn and welcome to our family and kudos to you for giving Buddy a new forever home.

Not to worry, you have only had him for one week and it is still the honeymoon phase right now, once he settles in and feels more comfortable in his new home he will open up and be more vocal, he is taking everything in right now and getting to know his new territory. Just give him time and be very patient with him as this process takes place.

Is this your first grey, your first bird? We love pictures here so if you have some of Buddy you would share with us we would love to see him.

You are well ahead of the curve for a rehome if Buddy is being quiet and gentle in just the first week. He is close to age of our rehome. It is normal for him to be holding back on talking and being a little withdrawn, he doesn't know what he is getting into with your home. If he has been rehomed a time or two, he is getting the lay of the land and wondering if he is safe. I look forward to seeing how he fits into your life and how he will blossom with love and care.

sounds like you are doing a great job .. thanks for rescueing him from a bad place unfit for birds. my advice is to keep doing what you are doing and just talk to him let him move along at his own pace ... lotta patience and just talking i think once he feels secure again he'll talk up a storm :D welcome
