So I went out to the ranch today and found a pigeon a tame one. with its wings clips. Hes been hanging out at the ranch for the past week and I walked right up to him and picked him up. Hes brown, none of us have ever seen a brown pigeon. I put an add on kijiji. I have my Grey cage and no Grey because we are not ready yet, but its nice because we have a place for the pigeon to stay untill we find his owners. What should I do I picked up Bonanza Parakeet Food because simply I dont know what Im doing... can anyone help ?

You should really leave that pigeon alone. It's been around fior a week and so far it's fine. Leave it outside. They survive very well outside. Pigeons are just like any other wild birds outside--titmice---chickadees----gold finches--barn swallows--wrens etc. They all carry different diseases that they themselves are immune to. Using your parrot equipment to house the bird is crazy. I would never go to any pet store to buy any food. I grew up in an inner city area ( manhattan) that had thousnads of pigeons around and people ( especially old people people who used to just sit in the parks fed them for years when they were around which actually was 24/7. Ever hear of Central Park, Rockafeller Center, Washington Square PK in Greenwich Village?

Well for the last 6 yrs, The Mayor of New York has made feeding pigeons against the law. Fines are given if caught. They multiple like crazy.

But if you wanna feed that pigeon, just take a slice of bread, let it go very stale, crush it up or just make some toast, crush it up and feed or you can take all the left over seed shells from your parrot's dish and throw it out. They're scavengers and will eat anything that they can swallow.

Dave that pigeon has clipped wings so avoiding any predators can be problematic until a good molt. Bird is already inside the cage so lets roll with it for now and do your best tracking that band information. Always disinfect any cage and accouterments between any birds Parrots or Pigeons. Here are some sites with info. http://www.pigeoncote.com/vet/recovery/recovery.htm, http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/epi/epi-pigeon.shtml, http://www.petcaregt.com/pigeons/Pigeon-Health.html

I thought I had made this quite clear, I didnt randomly find a pigeon catch it and throw it in with my parrot so they could be friends. I dont own ANY birds yet and wont own any for about 4 months yet. The bird has its wings clipped and it is by no means a wild animal, its tame and freindly, this is not new york and from the reading I have done your not supposed to feed them bread, people keep these guys as pets, where Greys are common they probably think your crazy for keeping them as pets.

Call me insane but around here I am not going to leave a house pet with clipped wings at the barn with all the barn cats, he got lucky so far. Luck can run out though

As for all the helpful responses here is whats happening, I had no intentions on keeping him as my pet and called about 5 places, both our humane society and our bird rescue and rehabilitation have agreed to take him in, the rehab place is where he is going because they have a pigeon guy and they said if he is adoptable the humane society can have him to adopt out unless he is wild caught because then its illegal to own him as a pet and they keep him.

They eat Pigeon feed. Local Tractor supply/ Agway. Water in a bowl and a bathing dish. Does it have a band? I can give you a contact that breeds and flys Pigeons. He is a club president. Let me know if you still need help:)
