Beak cleaning

Hi all. I am a new Grey owner. Snoopy is a 5 y/o CAG. Has anyone else notices their birds cleaning off their beak after eating sticky or wet food? My Grey like to ball up a piece of newspaper strip and roll in in his beak. It seems like he is using it like a toothbrush to clean his beak. Is their any such thing as a toothbrush for the birds? Is there any other paper I should be using? I always make sure there is no color print on the strips I give him. Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure how safe the black ink is, I'm sure someone knows on here though. My grey will shred just about any paper he get a hold of...I try to give him plain white paper towels when he seems to be in the mood for destruction. After meals mine will tongue the roof of his beak, which seems his preferred method.

Josey will wipe her beak on anything and that includes whatever I am wearing at the time. She eats some warm oatmeal in the mornings and I wipe off the excess on her beak with a tissue, she does not like it but I do it anyway before she wipes it on me.

They seem to like to wipe their beak after eating and if they want to do it on paper then that is fine.

SandyinFlorida, I see this is your first post, why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little more about you and your grey. Thanks.

Nature tells most parrots to wipe off any excess food or other foreign item from their beaks. They do that to make sure that no particles get pushed into their nostrils. That also applies to their feet (legs, toes and pads) which they're constantly cleaning and stripping off dead scales. They'll wipe their beaks on anything solid..perches, cage bars, edges of food dishes etc.

Herbie is only a baby and has just started to feel the need to clean his beak. He has started to let me clean his beak by hand with a paper towel although he also enyoys wiping it on anything he can.

He also manages to develop quite a food beard, the little feathers on the front of his face get covered in bits of food. He had his first shower last week and let me gently wash his face with water :)
