Are human baby toys safe for birds?

Hi guys. I was at Walmart the other day looking at the baby toys. Wow! There are some great toys that would provide hours of entertainment for a fraction of the price of actual "bird toys" sold in pet stores or online websites. I do think they would be safe for my baby grey but I just wanted to double check with you guys. One is a dangling monkey that jingles when it is moved- it has a velcro attachment that I could use to attach it to the cage. Next is a flat, colorful giraffe with hard plastic feet and is crinkle-y to the touch..no attachments but I could probably make something to attach it to the cage. Last is a small hard plastic piano with three buttons that play various tunes when pressed, a plastic wheel that spins on top of the piano with colorful beads inside, and a plastic bar running around along the top with- you guessed it, more plastic like blocks that can be pushed around the bar. No clue how I would attach this besides maybe a zip lock tie. Do these toys sound safe for a baby grey? Any suggestions on how to better attach them to the cage? Off the top of my head, I'd say no. Most baby toys are NOT designed to be torn to shreds and possibly eaten....behavior you can expect out of your grey, but not your average baby.

My answer is, "It depends." Teething toys ARE made for chewing on and can hold up pretty well, but more elaborate stuff - especially anything with a noise maker (electronic or mechanical) - raises concerns. Although toys are made so kids can't get at batteries and electronics, parrots come complete with tools and strength for bypassing such security measures. Plushy-type toys might be OK, but I'd worry about any stuffing and would also be careful of threads or parts which may ensnare a toe or strangle the bird. If there's any doubt, of course, it's better to be safe than sorry.

 

My Spencer came from a woman who was a daycare provider and I got some baby toys along with him. All of those have been durable enough that they are still around (teething keys, some kind of plastic 'girl' with a rolling wheel - sort of like a Weeble Wobble, but not), so, again, it depends.

Nice to know that you found out some 3 to 4 creative toys for your bird.You may think about increasing the size of your cage to let the toys fit in.I would also suggest you to not use

toys that move in the cage as they may harm your bird.I hope this helps.
