Max Vet Visit

splint101

Recommended Posts

Hey guys it's been a while since my last visit here. Max is just over 7 months old now and is doing well. Today I took him to the vet that some people told me is the best vet in my area. I just took him for a check up and beak and nail trim.

The reason for me writing this post is, I would like to know what is the correct way to trim a Grey's beak and nail's?

After Max's visit to the vet he is not able to climb around in his cage anymore. He falls straight from the top to the bottom. His claws has no grip on the perches...... He is also very very sad.....

Please HELP!!

Generally I do not think trimming nails is necessary and the beak should never be trimmed unless there is an overgrowth problem. Most birds will care for their nails and beaks, keeping them in good order for all they need to do (climb, chew, eat etc). This may not result in a bird that is super "comfy" to have on your shoulder, but I think its better to deal with that and allow the bird to have its body perform properly.

General rule of thumb, when your bird is walking on a flat surface, the nails are a fine length provided the front of their footpad is not lifted up off the surface when walking.

If Max was "over trimmed" dont worry too much, the nails and beak will grow back in some time. However, if he is falling a lot you may need to adjust the cage with this in mind (padding, lower perches etc) to prevent injury.

Post edited by: dblhelix, at: 2007/09/21 19:46

I agree with BMustee and dblhelix, we have 2 cement perches in Makena's cage which keep his nails perfect. We don't really see a need to ever trim him. Sounds like they went WAY too far with Max's nails.

Definitely lower all the perches and maybe stick some padding in his cage. His nails will grow back, just keep him safe in the mean time!

i agree with the advice given, adjust the cage until his nails grow a bit more and get a couple of cement perches he should keep his nails in check himself then. i have seen brian looking at and nibbling his own nails :P

in the mean time i'd go back to your vet and ask him why this is happening.

He seems okay now not falling anymore, I guess it was just strange for him with sort nails. I however did go and speak to my neighbour and he said that he always takes his moms grey there and they have done a good job. He also told me that Max should be fine by tomorrow or so. But yea I have one of those cement perches in the cage at the moment but I am going to get two or so more of them I also see no need to trim their nails etc. To me the vet just made it a bit to short. He did however eat this eve and drink some water so he is getting there. :)

Thanks for the replys this is why I love this forum I forgot how home this forum feels. I should pop in more around here.

By the way how is CD doing..?

Great advice from the other members, perhaps a phone call to the vet for some advice,If the nails had been cut to short they would have bleed, nails should be clipped on the very tips, taking care not to clip beyond the blood vessel that runs into the nail.Maybe your grey feels slightly strange with shorter nails.Invest in some cement perches, they are great for keeping the nails trimmed.
