Potty Training Tips

Hello everyone.

 

I am very interested in tips/suggestions about how to successfully potty train a young CAG.

We have recently moved into a new house, and really want to keep the new carpet as clean as we can.

:woohoo:I've had birds my whole life, but if it's possible I'd like to know how.

I'm at work and it's pretty slow, so I jump at the chance to answer questions on the forum.

 

Potty training isn't too hard...mine is almost trained. Sometimes he has a hard time holding it, but at least he knows not to let loose on me. LOL

the second short article was actually just as helpful as the full page one. Less is more sometimes, eh? (Haha, my first use of "eh" in a post).

 

I am excited to get this process started from day 1 of having Lolo home.

some sites tend to over compicate things with jargon and mumbo jumbo, you are right less is deffinately more somtimes. especially on a friday

Yeah…I've read just about everything I could find before I got my CAG and some stuff is so full of fillers it's unreal.

I've been reading everything I can get my hands, or eyes on. There is a lot of info out there. I have found that this forum is a very good place to weed things out.

the forum is excellent, i had LOADS of questions, and yes while the books and things have the answers filtering through it all to find one specific bit is a pain in the neck. plus there isn't always everything in the books. i know i have asked questions, and seen questions whos answers come from experience alone. you know, the ones that you feel silly asking but it's garanteed every grey owner has wondered at some point they seem to leave things like that out of books.

 

ooops off topic.. anyway.. toilet training.. the best thing to do really is praise them for pooping where you want them to, when brian poops in his cage or on his stand i make a fuss "oooh go poop brian!" or something like that. if he does it on the floor before i get to him to move him, i ignore it and clear it away. he is starting to announce his poops now, usually with a big whistle, i think he expects me to be watching

Hahaha...that's hilarious. My degree and experience is in early childhood development, and I can definitely relate. 2 and 3 year olds are very proud of themselves when they poop in the potty, why shouldn't a CAG be proud when it poops in the right place?

Exactly! thats a great comparison. i bet you can apply a lot of your knowlage to the development of the birds. they really are very similar. i don't have children, but when my mum birdy sat for me, when i came she was glad to give him back citing "it's like having another baby"....... except these ones bite if they don't get their way and fly a lot faster than any child can run

Rockelle, my 23 year old CAG that I fostered, was so much like a 3 year old it cracked me up. She would call me over if I wasn't paying attention to her and look and me and say "Hi". She loved to play jokes on my step mom. Her favorite being imitating the microwave beep.

 

I am really hoping that my two passions, animals and children, blend together well.
