murfchck
Found 2 pin feathers starting on his belly and one bigger one on his back! Hope they are still there tomorrow, this is the third time for the one on his back. Dr says when he pulls it till there is blood it gives him a rush so i have been spaying the aloe in my hand and dabbing it on the pin to maybe keep him away from it. I saw a touch of blood this afternoon but the feather is still there right now. I have another rescue family i will be meeting with tomorrow. The cage i had to sell i had put on craigs list this morning and the husband called about it. His wife works for a vet and the city called them about a bird they had removed from a home because the owner, who was older, had passed away TWO weeks earlier and they had just found him. This bird has been thru hell and she is hoping to regain his trust in humans. So sad, the bird is a military macaw and they are unable right now to handle him. Greywings
All the best to the new pinny and to the Military Mac they can be a bit aggressive this time of year even with out mistreatment.
murfchck
So much for the pin feathers... :'( I think i am going to look into the vest and see what that is about. He must be feeling much better, he is starting to wander. I was cleaning today, had 2 of the dogs outside and one in the bedroom, and the one who is scared to death of Oliver, was in the room i was in. I walked toward the kitchen and there he was walking into the living room. I never even heard him climbing off his stand. Lol Then this evening we heard strange noises coming from their room so went to check it out, there he was on the side of Stewarts cage chewing the wood frame on the wall. He has the same wood by his cage but i guess he wanted Stewart to get in trouble for the chewing and not himself! He is a smart cookie!
murfchck
Yesterday was stressful to say the least. Heavy storms and tornados all around us. We got lucky and were not hit. My wonderful, wonderful neighbor came over when she heard our sirens to help me with all the animals. 4 dogs, 1 cat, 3 fish and 2 birds. I had already put all their food and extra water in the "safe" room along with their travel cages some toys and leashes, flashlights and my comfort bottle of wine. Lol The birds did wonderful and stayed on their stands, i think they knew of the impending weather and understood the need for co operation! My dogs who normally growl at each if one gets too close stayed together in two dog beds. Watching the news this morning and i feel so blessed that we are all okay. It was the first time, according to the news, that both Dallas and Ft Worth has tornado emergency evacuations at the exact same time.

murfchck
Thanks! The tornado jumped over my nieces house in Arlington and her sons school was hit but all the kids were safe. My husband is a part of a group out cleaning up in Arlington today, no cell phones allowed. As bad as this was, not one death has been reported so far. These cities were on their game, we were all aware of the storms and the severity of them hours before they hit. Kuddos to the weathermen! I didn't see the weather link, did i miss something? katana600
I enjoy reading about your progress with Oliver and Stewart. I love the outdoor playstand where they can get some sunshine. The pictures are awesome, I find Oliver to be a handsome boy, he is just full of himself. You must have the most interesting household on the block. Congratulations on the progress you have already made. It is quite a commitment to have one rehomed parrot and to have two at a time is way more than twice the fun. murfchck
Having these guys are a blast no doubt! Each day is something new. My day of pure enjoyment will come the day Stewart starts talking. He is still adding sounds everyday, yesterday was laser sounds. Today he started putting his sounds to my words like kiss, he makes a kiss sound. I asked if he wanted some more water and he made water pouring sounds. He is smart as a whip, i can whistle something to him and by the next day he'll just about have it down and i am talking weird songs that i know he wouldn't have already heard, Popcorn and Doris Days Whatever Will Be Will Be. I never thought that Oliver would be talking before Stewart though, but i am using that to stir Stewart, lol. Since Oliver is insistant on taking over Stewarts stuff, including his cage and now stand, i am trying to get him to say "help, go home Oliver" but i think i need to give it up and try for a siren sound! murfchck
Wow, been a few days since i have had time to write. We have had the boys out since Friday morning, only going to their cage to sleep. What a handful, but boy has it been fun. The weather has been beautiful and it has sure made a change in them, they are so playful! There have been people over every night and they are right there in the center of everyone, Oliver just wanted on the ground and walked around climbing things and doing his best Stevie Wonder. This morning after breakfast, he was charging all his toys and then me. You could see in his eyes that he was playing thank gosh otherwise that would have been scary! He is still taking his steam baths but getting the drops in his nose just isn't happening. He is still breathing loud so more than likely he will be going into the vet to get it flushed. Yuckie. murfchck
Bad feather day yesterday. Found 3 on the ground of his. Trouble is, is he pulling bc they are damaged or pulling to pull? I read that with this pdd, he will pull out feathers also regurgitate which he has been doing a lot of after meals as of late. He just puts his foot in his mouth and pumps his head up and down. Hubby says he is fine and i am just working myself up, but i can't help but worry. It was a dumb idea but went to see the lady i got the boys from to show her some updated pictures. She freaked out saying how much weight he has lost, how his breast bone was not showing that much when she gave him to us.... Really? I went right to his second day picture to show her that, yes, yes it did stick out that much and more. She called last night but i didn't have the strength to be nice so i ignored it. She has one baby grey left that she is keeping, right now he looks healthy. Also had another older grey, 5 i think she said, that she bought back from someone. Poor girl had her toes on one foot but no talons (nails, i am not sure i am using the correct terms). That seems to be normal with hers, Mary Ann is missing some too. She said she has more babies coming from another pair she has.
Greywings
Talon is correct, it seems Greys are hatched with feet issues as well as parent birds "trimming" their toes or feet through either inexperience or just very bad parenting. Don't stress out over the feathers or the regurge he is more likely to repeat it if he gets a strong reaction. Remember it has taken him many months or years to develop these behaviors and it will take time to overcome them or replace them with healthier habits-maybe never. Patience & just love him as he is everyday. >:>
murfchck
I just worry that these are the disease signs. I need to stop reading about it, lol. Do you know if the bamboo kitchen utensils are safe? Oliver tore apart one or three of these. He loves them but i worry they are treated with something but then again they are food safe. See, i think tooooo much! Lol
Greywings
Yes they are safe, Bamboo is good to destroy.
murfchck
Yeah! He loves those things! He is so mad at me right now for spraying him for his bath, i can give him one and be his hero! Oh, i was leaving for the store earlier and told the boys, " gotta go " and shut their door, he just started talking, i couldn't hear what he was saying but, after his talk he started laughing. It was so funny to hear that from him. I know it wasn't Stewart cuz he was making his noises too.
murfchck
Close call yesterday. Been having a hawk issue in our back yard so we decided out front only and never far from them, arm only. Oliver wanted on his stand and climbed up by his self with hubby there supervising. I had 3 neighbors over and my niece, she wanted to hold Stewart so we moved into the yard a bit and i put him on her arm with me on one side and Trisha on the other. My husband removed Oliver from the stand and put him under the porch. Just as he set him down on the chair a hawk flew mere inches from Trishas shoulder and then right over the stand Oliver had just been on. It took a while for my heart to stop pounding in my ears! No more outside until they get their aviary, which i am going out today to look for! Here is Olivers last outting, look at that smile! Going to be hard to tell him no, but not so hard when you think of the alternate!
Greywings
He is looking better, those feathers have a nice glow now. Glad you are working on safety!
murfchck
We are giving him some time to do it on his own first but he has so many new feathers coming in on his chest and back and keeps plucking them, we are discussing a vest. Stewart will be getting a harness soon too. Until these guys were comfortable with us i didn't want to throw a bunch of scary stuff at them! Oliver is screaming today, just looking out the window. Its like he knows he can't go out. So i ran to the farmers market and got them an ear of corn, they love that but it is given only as a treat. That should take his mind off of the sun shine for oh, i don't know, 10 minutes give or take! Gotta admit though, he is a quick learner, i won't react to his screams, instead i wait for him to say hello, then i will go to him. He however said hello when i was unable to stop what i was doing and i had to listen to him saying it, with me repeating it, for close to 5 minutes. If someone walked by they would think i had a crazy house! Lol I found a 10x10 6' tall dog run today for $248, not bad until you factor in another panel for the top, that was $160.00 lol, not even the hot dipped galvanized which is what they really need. Hubby is leaving work at 2 today, maybe i can sweet talk him into checking out a fence supply today so we can have it up by Sunday! Got some friends in construction who can get it wholesale! Fingers crossed they are not at the races today.
murfchck
Ha, wholesale ended up close to 600.00. Still looking into other options. Spent Saturday looking but this may end up being a long process. Hubby is a dyi-er and EVERYTHING must be modified! Lol Well he is not really a diy guy, did all type of contruction before just not any more, now he just sells supplies to the builders. I have a game room we built and it is dubbed our "safe room" bc if anything happens thats were to go. Those walls are not going anywhere, lol. He missed his calling as an engineer. murfchck
Woo-hoo, found a great dog run on CL today for $50.00. In as much as we are only using it for the frame, i couldn't pass it up! Thursday we are getting welded wire (? I think thats what he called it anyway) and taking it from 6' to 7'. He actually assembled it with the chain link for me to get ideas, so to the hardware store i went. Got rolls of bamboo to put on the top as shade and stared at grapevine plants for the inside in pots but really want to research what plants are safe for them! I am so excited for the boys! This will give them even more freedom bc we won't be having to stand there holding them looking around! Come on Thursday! ( Now watch it rain. :-( lol )

murfchck
I should have known, now it is forcasted for Thursday night and Friday morning. Lol Your right, by the 5 pm news they will probably change it to snow and sleet.
murfchck
Oh what an evening with Oliver. It seems our relax before bedtime does just the opposite for him! He was everywhere and into everything. The birds room use to be a workout room so there were framed mirrors all over. Most we covered with colorful sheets but left one behind Stewarts cage bc it is the length of the wall. He tore it up. After 4 months he decided he needed to remove the wood trim from around it. Guess i will be covering that one today somehow. I saw Mary Ann yesterday, she looks awful. I have seen pictures of over grooming in extreme but she is worse then the pictures. Other than her tail and head where she can't reach she has scissored all her feathers. Even the new ones coming in, destroyed. I don't know what to tell her to do. Rope for her to preen, lots of toys to keep her busy, baths even. She does all this for her, she just keeps on doing it. I fear this just isn't the right bird for them. They are both afraid of her. Yesterday she was scratching her head and Mary Ann lifted her wings, she wouldn't pet her there cuz she was scared. I made her and all was good but that was the first time she has touched her without a glove. My husband and myself have been bitten by her yet they haven't which tells me they are not working with her. They got the glove last week. This could be her distress, no real touching and now a glove. But how do i tell her this?
