Julia
Those irresponsible vets...grrrrrrrrrrrr... I want to..BITE them! Sending you all my positive energy! Thinking about you! Get well soon.
murfchck
Thank you all so much! The water works have started, but instead of it being because of my fear of Olivers unknown and of my frustration it is because of all of the positive support from all of you here. Hugs to you all from Oliver and myself! I will be getting his records today and taking him in tomorrow. They are keeping him the day so they can monitor him and do what test they need to at his pace. I will let you all know how it goes. Thank you again for your positive thoughts!
katana600
I love the pictures you posted. Oliver looks like he is smiling in the first one as he rubs the back of his head. My guess is he is thinking how lucky he is to have found your home. Then he is smiling because he is happy with you. He is in a rough place medically and progress may be a long series of slow fits and starts, but you are one the right track to look for a place that will work with you for his sake. When the going gets tough, sit quietly in your room, just breathe. It got me through the worst of times. We want to be doing something and what you are doing with him, letting him know you are safe and trustworthy and working for his health is powerful good medicine. murfchck
Just got home from our vet adventure, 9:45 pm. I dropped him off at 9 am. They are running more bloodwork to start to rule out what to treat for or if it is even treatable. The sinus issue he said has been going on for quite some time and there is perm damage, so steam showers and daily misting to keep them moist, saline drops by us and rinses by him (as needed). He is fearing wasting as his weight is 880 grams for sure. Not knowing his history makes it really tough so we are having that bloodwork done also. I guess you just can't trust anyone, now my Stewart could be in danger of this also. My only consulation is that Stewart came from her also so he had already been exposed to whatever she she may be hosting in her home. The woman who "claimed" to have rescued him, seems to have been the one who actually did this, or let this happen to him. His wing is frozen and cannot be fixed. Bad circulation and artritis due to what we can only guess as cramped living quarters. I know vets have to say this but hearing that we may need to make a "decision" never helps! Tests should be back in a few days, we overnighted them all, i will let you know. Fingers crossed
chezron
So sorry for what you and poor Stewart are going through. It breaks my heart. Good luck to you.
Malikah
I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. So did he take him off medications for now? Did he give you any suggestions of how to get some weight on him in a hurry? Maybe contact a good rescue that has been in existence for a number of years for some tips. They sadly see so much of this type of thing.
murfchck
Thank you all for your thoughts. He wants him to complete the antibiotics, to prevent him building any resistance to the meds for the future. As far as him gaining weight, right now it is feed him what he will eat and i have been mixing the zupreem baby formula in with his morning meal of egg and fruits. This vet is actually very involved with rescues. All we can do right now is hold our breath. I spoke to the person who i got Oliver from today. (The vet asked i get him as much history as i could.) I can not even process what she was saying to me because from one minute to the next, her story changes. When we got him home and heard how bad he was breathing i had called her, she said she didn't understand that, he had never been sick. Today, she said " i told you when i first got him he was sick like that, i took him to the vet who gave him a shot in his chest and he was fine till you took him home" really???? I asked her after she had rescued him, how long did she have him with her. " Oh, for at least a year." Well this little guy didn't get this sick over night, he didn't lose all his feathers over night. I am trying to tell her, explain to her, how sick he is and all she could say was, " i have another scarlet who is fully feathered, hand tamed, really a pet bird for $400.00 if i could swing that. Oh, he is missing his chest feathers." All i could think was, did she really just say that? Then she said she hopes i will help her with these rescues. Heck, i am too busy trying to rescue this bird from the damage SHE did! Aaarrrrgghhhh!

Malikah
Eat Oliver Eat! Goooooo team Murfchck! How many birds does this person have? It's a good thing I don't live in TX. Grrrrrr
murfchck
She has tooooo many. Hoarder comes to mind, but i don' t really know for sure. I did just see a listing on Craigslist for her little birds. Going to give the info to our vet so he can do what he can. My hubby thinks she has run out of room and thats why she is parting with the big ones right now. They are sick and bald so out they go so she has room for more to abuse. I feel she doesn't really think she is doing anything wrong, she really thinks she is helping them. Problem with that is she stated mine wasn't in that condition when she got him a year ago! So how did she help? He wouldn't eat for me at all today. Eggs, pasta, pellets, chop, peas, apples and oranges even offered seeds and nuts, nothing not even his beloved snap peas! That is until tonight... Got some take out Mexican food. He ate an entire taco. My husband thinks it may be my cooking, after seeing him pi g out i am starting to agree with him! Gave him his antibiotic about 30 minutes later and he went right to his pellets and started eating again! We called the vet to see if his tests came back by chance, no luck. May be in by Tuesday but this waiting is killing me!
judygram
She probably thinks she is helping but she is only creating more Olivers, why some people think they can take care of so many birds is beyond me but so glad you got Oliver and I am holding good thoughts that he gets better and grows back his feathers, with your tender loving care he just might. TWIX
I hope he gets better soon so he can give you unconditional love, the one you deserve
Malikah
Aha, tacos! So now you can take all sorts of healthy foods, sprinkle them with a little bit of chili powder and cumin and put them in a taco shell and wahlah! Yeah, if he's like Kito that will work about once, if you are lucky. LOL!
murfchck
Again, all day would not eat. We went and got weaning pellets, told that may stimulate him. Nope, nothing, nada. Tonight my husband split up so lasagna for the dogs, i figured why not give that a try.... Sure enough, he ate almost a full bowl. But the jokes on him, it was full of spinach! Bwahahaha, one for me! murfchck
Yeah, they are at our table every meal. They even have their own plates, that is Stewart right after dinner a few nights ago, Oliver sits by my husband. Lol I am guessing it is the antibiotic making him have less of an appetite. At first we would give it to him in the morning and had an easier time with him eating breakfast, but lunch and dinner suffered. Now we changed to evening, before before bed, and breakfast and lunch are nill but dinner he eats like there is no tomorrow. 2 more days and he is done with it! ( that is the day the bloodtests should be back so fingers crossed he gets the all clear and isn't put on more )He did eat a few grapes tonight along with dineer, which he use to love so thats a good sign, oh, and of course his snap peas. I gotta ask this and it may sound silly but, i have never heard a macaw growl, and i have not read anything about them doing that, do they? Boy howdy, did he today. He fixed his eyes on something that we couldn't figure out what and growled. At first i thought it was just his sinus bc he does make groans, but then i walked outside and my husband said he did it again. Ah, life with these 2 are full and i knew it wouldn't be easy but the small steps we are making together are so very amazing and wonderful. I really hate the thought of going back to work, but alas these vet bills are killing us!
judygram
Well glad to hear the antibiotics are about over and then maybe his appetite will return but you are doing so well in coming up with ideas to get some food in him even if it is not the healthiest but you can work on that later. I have no idea if a macaw can growl but I imagine they can since greys can and it would have to be a fearful sound since they are a bigger bird, he must have seen something, hope you don't hear it too often. murfchck
It was actually a quiet noise, which is why i thought at first it was his sinus. His eyes and stance however were powerful looking, even for a naked guy! Yeah, i am not to happy with his diet right now. We caught him eating his pellets tonight after we had put them to bed and we snuck out of the room before he heard us so he wouldn't stop, i will see in the morning how much of that he ate. I had made some corn bread muffins loaded with good stuff which he liked before so i try to crumble some in everything just for greens, and i made some chop which i am serving with each dinner meal, i tell him its his salad and hope some gets down, even if it just sticks to something. He is getting suppliments but i don't want him to lose any weight, he can not afford that at 895 grams. I was wrong on his meds, tonight was the last dose! Yeah! murfchck
Well he didn't eat much last night. I scrambled an egg and gave him some bananas this morning, wouldn't eat. (I noticed the air sac that is on his neck/ shoulder area on his back has now expanded to his front neck area by his crop. Waiting for a call back from the vet. I know air sacs are normal but this was huge and he doesn't seem to be breathing with any ease.) I offered him his almonds and walnuts and he snubbed those so off to the store i went, ran out of snap peas last night and that is all he will eat, his tummy was growling this morning so if he will eat them i will let him! He did eat a few pellets, but only if i hand them to him, which i will do for him as long as he needs me too. I am usually a positive person but today it is harder than normal to pull off. His balance has gotten bad, this not eating phase, his breathing, the clicking. I can not help but look at him and cry. He will not even step up for his morning cuddles. He isn't sitting on the bottom, nor is he even sitting low on his legs, his eyes look good but the bad is all i can focus on and see. My heart is breaking. My poor husband, today is our 25 yr anniversay, he is up for a promotion he should hear something about today, this should be such a happy day and all i keep doing is bothing him at work with my tears and fears. My oliver does not deserve to be going thru this...Damn those people who did this to him. Okay, pity party over, going to try again to get him to step up so we can sit in the steam and open up his little nose.
Malikah
Just know that you are giving him the best care possible. He does. We all do. {{{Murfchck}}} Happy Anniversary! 25 Years, WOW!! Keeping my fingers crossed the promotion goes through. Wishing you a terrific evening.
murfchck
Thanks. Vet called and if the air sac is like it was this morning and he still has not eaten he goes back in. They will monitor the sac and tube feed him. I gave him the zupreem baby formula this evening thru a syringe ( no needle of course ) and after that he actually ate some seed and pellet. Not much, but it is a step. So, if he eats in the morning and his sac is huge again, i can send them a picture or video. I think they think i can not tell the diff between a bubble of air wrapping around his neck and a crop. I left him uncovered tonight to see if that makes any diff. I'm grasping

murfchck
So far a pretty good morning. We did not cover his cage last night and he woke up with no huge air sac and started dancing as soon as i opened his door! I made him a big bowl of fruits with his snap peas on the bottom so he would have to put everything in his mouth to get to them, in theory anyway. He used the side of his beak and scooped it all to the floor to get to them darn things. I steamed some fresh corn on the cobb for lunch, he wanted some! Yeah! Now i have some brocc, yams, carrots and green beans steaming for his dinner! We also got a great shower steaming in this morning! Attaching a picture of him dancing after the shower. Side note: if you are thinking of installing a shower perch in your home, think hard about where you put it. This morning as i shaved my legs, i had to keep looking up to remind him not to poop! (it would have landed right on my head!) I thought i had thought of everything, distance from the wood ceiling the shower rods even the bounce of water when rinsing so no soap or shampoo could hit him. I had him protected, i just failed to think about protecting myself! Lol
oblivion
Not that there's anything wrong with the showers, but I wonder if you could get him to use something like this (without the medicated pads, of course) and/or if there would be any benefit: http://www.amazon.com/Vicks-V1200-Personal-Steam-Inhaler/dp/B0000TN7MY
