Greywings
I think you need to be direct but not harsh, tell them the glove may be adding to the problems. Ask them if they ever think they might be comfortable with her. Suggest talking with ah bird behavior expert, joining the Yahoo clicker training group or reading some of the really great behavioral articles by Barbara Heidenreich. It would not be kind to let them keep going down the same non productive road. Also I would suggest more baths, more fatty acids and vitamin A (bright orange and Yellow veggies) and sprouted foods being a solid part of her diet (I like the Sprout Peoples site they have mixes for birds).. murfchck
She thinks another bird to keep her company is going to fix it. I told her no to that, flat out no. First off it won't fix her secondly, i can see it now, she will get a quaker and that would be the last time she ever attempts to handle the one she already has. My husband is already feeling that we will end up with her even though we shouldn't with Oliver, but i already know of a good home that really would take care of her affection wise. They do give her all good food, vitamins, sunshine and baths but nothing can replace a good cuddle session! I should add the she sits on the husbands lap each night, so she says, but since he is afraid of her he won't pet any part of her but her head. So it isn't that she is locked in a cage. I know when they get home from work, the cage is open and she is free to go where ever she wants in the house and in the morning she is in the kitchen with them having breakfast at the table, so in that way, she is spoiled! They need to just get bit so the fear will be over! Lol
Greywings
So many different reason for plucking & barbering including over vitaminization, could have Yeast or bacteria on the skin, could have raging hormones, could be heavy metal toxicity, list is endless. A good Vet exam might be in order as well as a different home situation.
murfchck
I agree. This girl was housed in the same cage as Oliver and with his issues i would be at the vet getting bloodwork done asap!
murfchck
Well, guess what? Todays the day! Aviary makin day! Poor guys haven't been out in a while, but that ends today! Hubby is as excited as i am, even decorating it. I was looking online for 2 days for a manzanite bush, tree, evergreen, whatever they class it as, only found i place that sells tubes. If this is native to Ca., why is it so hard to purchase? Not one nursery around here has even heard of it. Lol oh well, i will post pictures of their first outting as soon as i can! (Stewart tried to fly last night inside, didn't go so well.) This is like waiting for your new baby bird excitement i have going on right now. They are going to be so happy! murfchck
We under estimated the strength of wire. Dang it is tuff to work with. Not to mention Pat wanted it taller than 6' so he wouldn't bump his head which meant we had to cut poles and adjust everything. Then came the wire... It was cheaper to buy it 4' than 3' so it is now 8' tall, 10' long and 6' wide. It is huge. We were unable to finish it today, got all but the door and top completed. We will be able to finish tomorrow as long as the rain holds off. But then we have the issue of it being to heavy for just us two to move into place. Lol I am putting in a picture of what we did today. I don't know whats up with Mr. Stewart, most mornings i opened his cage and he will come out on the door, poop and got to the top to wait for breakfast. This morning i opened the door and he climbed out and tried flying again, landed a bit better. This evening during our play time, he climbed up to my shoulder and flew off, walked back to me to do it again. I wonder if he was flighted before we got him, he was clipped very badly and we are still working on getting them back into shape.
Greywings
Looks wonderful, good job! Just a little jealous here. Have you seen any of the videos on line of folks playing with their Macaws? There is one of a Macaw who loves to lie on his back and be slid quickly across a slick floor then gets up runs back to do it all over again and again. murfchck
We did see that one. Thats Pats goal with Oliver, not sliding, but getting him one his back! We are done except for the decorating! Here are some pictures of them enjoying the room!

murfchck
We are so happy with it! Tonight, all our neighbors came over and we were not looking around at the sky or looking closely at our dogs, worrying if they (Stewart) was going to fly. It is wonderful to put them in and let them be birds! We still have alot of work to do on it but thats going to be the fun stuff!! Lol
katana600
Another WOW, what a beautiful place for Oliver and Stewart to join you outside in a gorgeous setting. I love it! Great job, it looks like a lot of work and a very rewarding haven for you and the parrots.

murfchck
2 times now i have made posts and i am either hitting the exit button or they are going into cyber space... Hmmm. We had a great few days. Our crape myrtal branches dried in the sun after a cleaning so late Saturday we got to put them in place. Pat wanted to be sure Oliver could get all over since he doesn't fly, i call it their myrtal maze. Also almost got Stewart into the foutain! Almost... I will be adding 3 ferns across the front to block some afternoon sun, otherwise it is complete! They spent all day out there yesterday and loved it! Greywings
Looking great, you can also grow a vine or two over a side for sun screening. Climbing roses, Squash, Runner beans, Honeysuckle ect.
murfchck
We talked about that and a grapevine, but decided no flowering things we couldn't move because of bees. Lol

murfchck
They tend to follow me! Last year i got bit on my upper butt! Flew down my pants and didn't feel to good. Bees and June bugs scare the poo outta me! Lol snakes and mice are just fine, even spiders don't bother me! Lol

murfchck
Had a great day yesterday, boys got to go out and play! Headed for the high 90's today and tomorrow so until we get the misters around their aviary, i don't want to overheat Oliver. Been having issues with him eating past few days, he has an addiction to nuts, thats all he wants now. I went and got him the zupreem nuts pellets to get him started, they are shaped like the nuts. He even holds them in his foot like a real nut, when he hits a roudybush pellet he will eat it normally. I only give him 2-3 nuts a day now. The first vet said to give him whatever he wants to get weight on him, now i regret following that advice. He had some peas and carrots this morning, not much, but i pulled the seed out leaving just the pellets and veggies right now. Will put the seed back in there in about an hour. ( i pulled all the nuts from the seed too. Lol )
Greywings
Don't beat yourself up, he did need those calories at the time. Like kids and some among us we all want the goodies even when we know better shy should he be any different. It is all just a part of how they make us use our brains for problem solving keeping us smarter and on our toes.

murfchck
Oliver is getting brave! I have started having him say "hello" in place of his screaming to be picked up if i am not in the room. I guess he didn't want to say hello when he was ready to come out of his room. As my husband walked past the hall, he asked if i did that? I went to look and see what he was talking about... This is what we saw.... I also had my first with Stewart today. We were sitting watching tv tonight and he was stepping from hand to hand making a purring sound with each step. He settled down and lowered his head. Now, he only lets me pet him on the back of his neck and only 2-3 strokes then he turns and bites. Tonight, about 5 minutes of rubbing, both directions and from his beak to his back, not one nip! I even kissed the top of his head twice! When i ran to the store, he was on his stand since daddy was home, and Pat said right after i shut the door Stewart flew after me. He loves me!!! Lol Today he does anyway. murfchck
Today started off swell. :-) I work them up and let them out of their cage, opened the drapes and went to start their breakfast. Right away i heard Stewarts, " i'm in trouble " chirp. I went back in to find Oliver on Stewarts cage chasing him. Stewart finally flew off his cage after trying to stand his ground! I never moved Stewarts cage into the other room as i couldn't make up my mind about it. Now i am thinking again that i should. Do you think it would make him feel more secure where he may start talking again? They are only in there at night to sleep, unless i need to run out during the day. I am really tossed about it. On one hand they have been in the same room for 4 months, maybe semi attached to each other for company. on the other hand Oliver is starting to be a bully towards him. murfchck
Boy oh boy. Oliver is sure chatty! He says hello very clearly but then will mumble mumble mumble with a hello in the middle of his mumble sentence. Is he trying to say more, to learn more? At 7 yrs is he even able too? I have heard ( or assumed ) he has said "really", and when he is in his food, we can hear " i will find it". His chatting is so cute, he will just go on and on, we go back and forth!
