scooter4n
Im about to make some toys for my gray, parrots love to chew on leather belts, is that safe material? I can chop my old leather belt to make a toy? and another material I was interested is wood. I was going to pickup some round sticks from Lowe's home improvement store to make play station and I was wondering what wood is save out of building material wood. thanks all
lovethatgrey
Personally, I would stick to leather that was specifically intended for parrots to play with. This way you know the leather was treated and processed in a safe manner. Here's 2 places you can order leather from. For wood I would stick to natural UNTREATED pine. http://www.twinleather.com/birdtoys/index.html http://www.cabirdnerds.com/
aerial.2000
I totally agree not to use your leather belt. It needs to be untreated by any type of chemicals cuz they will be chewing on it. I ran across this website and found it SO amazing that talks about what is and isnt toxic to CAG's from wood to food .... let me share with you! http://www.parrot-and-conure-world.com/non-toxic-for-birds.html
aerial.2000
Here is my question about making homemade toys ..... if you use newspaper should you avoid using anything in "colored" ink?

Wingy
Here is my question about making homemade toys ..... if you use newspaper should you avoid using anything in "colored" ink? The colors in the ink are plant based. What you do want to avoid are those ultra shiny slippery magazine covers that are coated in varnish or uv coating. I can't tell you for sure that its toxic but I can tell you that the slivers from it when the paper bends and it flakes off it burns like heck when it gets imbedded in your skin. Wingy
The shiny colored stuff in newspapers is fine. Its that ultra shiny heavy cover of a magazine that is bad. Edited April 22, 2012 by Wingy
