I looked at the forum and found a lot of answers. I still have 2 questions I need answered. The first could be considered 2 questions in one. Does a Grey always change their fav person when they get older or reach sexual maturity? and is there a way to keep your grey from breaking your heart? Also on a scale of 1-10 how loud is a grey?

They don't always change their favorite person when they reach sexual maturity, they can but it depends. I wouldn't worry about something that may or may not happen. What exactly do you mean by breaking your heart, you mean if they do change their favorite person?

Most greys are fairly quiet, my Josey is quieter than my sun conure who does occasionally scream. But they are far quieter than a cockatoo or macaw, on a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 4. This is of course my opinion.

Yeah like they love you when you first get them then in 2 years they see your mom or dad or whoever as their "mate" is there a way to keep being their fav? I know this Q may sound odd but i've heard a lot of ppl talking about greys in the wild find a mate at 2 or so and in captivity they do this by choosing another human sometimes.

Yes that is true, but sometimes it is the person they are bonded to that they view as their mate. There is not much you can do if they choose someone other than you when they do choose a mate, you will just have to learn to live with it. It doesn't mean they will not have anything to do with you if they choose someone other than yourself but the relationship will be somewhat different. I wouldn't worry about it for it may or may not happen.

I read that parrots from the Amazon area...Macaws, Conures, Amazons...are very loud because they flock togeather often, but African parrots do not flock togeather making them quieter because they don't have to scream over the other breeds. The Sun I had was so loud that you could hear him outside. My Grey however you cannot. It has to be dead quiet in the house to hear him from the other rooms...unless he is screaming at his toys or the finches, but even that is nothing after you have heard a Sun.

I give his chatter level a 3 and the screams a 4 1/2.<br><br>Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2007/09/17 05:13

Each bird is different.

My Que (TAG) however has never been loud from the start.

My amazon on the other hand when he gets going you can hear him all the way up the street. Good thing he don't do that often.

I can't help but add that if you are worried about loudness then maybe a bird it not for you.

Any bird can be loud. Some days even my budgies are so loud I wont to throw them out a window.<br><br>Post edited by: Tari, at: 2007/09/17 14:43

My CAG is a pretty quiet guy, he has his moments though usually he has a fit and tries to kill all of his hanging toys for about 15 minutes each day and then he is fine. He can mumbel away to himself for hours on end. I don't really consider that noise, it always makes me laugh when he says 'I luvvvvvvv youuuuuu babeeeeeeeee'

My Finni (TAG) is pretty quiet...he is still a baby though. I have noticed that when my macaw gets going at night and in the morning though...the more Finni decides to join in the fun and merry-making. He isn't even 1/4 of the noise as Loki is, so its no problem though. On the other question, I did read that TAGs don't change their favorite person as readily as CAG's. I have no personal experience with this, and maybe some other members here can give some personal examples. But what I read was that CAG's stay with their family unit much longer than TAGs. Therefore, about the two year mark, they do choose a mate and leave their family to begin their own. It was also insinuated that that is why CAG's are more prone to feather plucking than TAGs...as they are moved so young, but in the wild stay with their initial family unit much longer. It went on to say that TAG's leave their family unit to join a smaller almost juvenile family at a much younger age, therefore they don't have the propensity to change their favored one as much and its not as upsetting to be moved at the young age that these birds are sold, therefore less phobic behavior. As I said, no personal experience on that topic...but I thought it was interesting.

i have 3 greys, so it can get loud ! but i would say they have specific times during the day when they are noisy, usually first thing in the morning, singing, whistling & occasionally shouting, calms during the day & they start again early evening. But Greys are not excessively loud compared to some of the other breeds out there.

should i be worried brian seems to be so much louder than everyone elses grey? :S is he a special bird? LOL we make noises at eachother constantly when i am with him, and if i go upstairs to do house work i can hear him singing away to himself. i am quite lively "bubbly" person, has it just rubbed off on him? it might sound like a silly question but im starting to worry he's not quiet

Beccy,

I would not worry about it. Unless you see other behavioral changes. Some birds are just not loud.

My home is a rather quite home. I rarely have the TV on or the radio. I have no noisy neighbors. So my birds are pretty quite. Even the budgies seem to be calming down now.

My father, who has bread parrots for 20+ years, told me that females are much less likely to detach from their original caregivers because it is the males in the wild who have to detach and find a new flock/mate.
