grayghostandgreyparrot Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Hi, I've been looking at outdoor aviaries and the cost is way to high. Dog kennels of similar size are a fraction of the cost. Has anyone tried this? Is the bar spacing too wide? Can a Grey squeeze through a 2" opening? I saw a hinged folding kennel that would be great to set up in the spring and store away in winter.
bmatrow Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 (edited) I have considered an outdoor aviary. Not that I'm an expert but I wouldn't trust a 2" opening. And I may be wrong but I seem to recall galvanized steel is a no no for birds and most the dog kennels I've seen are all galvanized. Again I may be wrong on that one but I think I read it somewhere. You may look into building one instead of buying a pre-built. May come out cheaper if you have any carpentry skills. Something I'm slightly lacking in... bmatrow Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Okay! A quick double check on galvanized. It contains zinc and is not only toxic to birds but also toxic to just about anything.
Talon Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Yes, they aren't good for birds, toxic and too large of an opening form the bird to escape and a predator to get thru and grab them, a cats paw is would make that an easy reach......
