Brand new to this site and to the world of raising an African Grey congo baby; Help!

Hi, I am brand new to this forum and web site. I have no parrot experience although my career as a intervention specialist in an inner city with medically fragile, orthopedically handicapped individuals has given me a vast array of experience in teaching and loving these incredible children and modifying, making adaptations in every aspect of thier lives may afford me some common sense in raising such a smart and capable parrot... My African Grey congo baby is expected sometime at the end of this month.. I thought I saw a Bringing home your Baby article that was extremely helpful last night on this site, but I cannot find it today.. It speaks of the first three weeks and how to introduce the baby to other "predator" pets you may have living in your home(i.e., 18 lb. cat/ Australina Kelpie dog)... as I have NO previous experience with birds, can anyone help me locate this articele and any other articles that may help alleviate my insecurities with bringing this baby home soon. I want the transition to go well; I want the abay to feel nonthreatened and secure about living here.. any help would be apppreciated.

Welcome to our family. Congrats on your new baby coming home soon. There is a lot to read here, I hope you find the time to since you have never had a large parrot before. Greys are a lot like children and have important needs that must be met, as well as attention, ect. The thread you are looking for is a sticky in the Nursery Room, you should be able to find it. Best of luck and we look forward to hearing more and seeing some pics!

Hello kfs,

Welcome to our flock & Congratulations on your soon-to-be new addition!

When I'm trying to search for something, I usually Google "greyforums XXX" & have pretty good luck finding things. I thought maybe the article that you were looking at is the first of these links. But one of the others may be the stickies that Penny was referring to.

If not, please don't worry about posting specific questions that may have already been covered. It gives topics new life & another chance for people to become aware of them & offer additional input.

Welcome, it's greYt having you here! :)

The articles posted will get you going. One note on cats: It is best to keep them away from your bird. Even a playful swat with claws extneded can punture the skin of your bird and leave very nasty and dangerous bacteria, e-coli etc. and could possibly result in the death of your bird. The dog, well just see how he reacts, some will get along with birds, some don't and think they are fun to chase.

Thanks for looking around to learn all you can before bringing home your precious little companion. We are always learning from each other and love to share our lives with other people with an interest in their parrots. It is an amazing journey. Hopefully your breeder will also be involved with the transition of your baby to your home. Welcome to the forum. Do you have a name picked out for your little one?
