Ok so it's FAR from dog food, all human grade ingredients. I caught Christian in the box the other day, happily snacking on this stuff and I was shocked to say the least because I have not been able to get him to eat ANY vegetables, fruit yes veggies YUCK he says! SO I took a tablespoon of the Honest Kitchen, rehydrated it and left it out on the counter and he ate all of it.. is the a safe treat for him or even something he can have regularly?

Twenty years ago even Zoo's supplemented Parrot diets with dog chow now we know better. They do not need as much animal fat or protein or iron as is contained in dog chow. Also many brands of dog chow contain sugars, salts and even rancid fats definitely not recommended for birds may also contain some insecticides, antibiotics and bacteria. I would think that one occasional piece should not be an issue but I do not feed it to mine. A chicken bone or some water packed tuna or Salmon is fine.

Yours seems to not have meat so that problem is avoided but it does contain more vitamins than required in addition to his regular diet.

Twenty years ago, I had a recipe from my vet for peanut butter & dog food cookies that he said his zon was wild for. It never occured to me to worry a bit whenever Phenix walked over & helped himself to the dog's dry bowl. Back then it was (probably) an urban myth that people at Purina Mills occassionally walked around snacking on handfuls of their dog chow.

My how things have changed. Now, I won't feed the dog most of the dog foods on the market!

The list of ingredients on that web page look like they'd be okay for a parrot. Except the laws don't require all the ingredients to be listed, sometimes. Also, safe processing for a dog food, isn't necessarily safe for a parrot. They're much more susceptible to mold just for one example.

The ingredients included zinc amino acid chelate which I'd wonder about for a bird. Also, vitamin D is something birds need but too much can cause problems.

So, it might be ok that Christian helped himself, this time. But I'm not sure he should make a habit of it.
