Wine/beer corks

Are wine and beer corks okay to use to make toys?

 

It seems like they would love to tear them up.

 

I would, of course, sanitize them first.

I guess there could be some concern about fungus of some sort in the middle (as with any wood product). I think it would be easy enough to boil them or bake them first. (Or a combination of the two...)

I have on occasion given a cork to Isaac to play with. I will slice off the end that makes contact with the wine\beer and give him the top part. He shreds it to bits. He doesn't seem to care for corks too much anymore though.
