Adventure Pack Travel Cage

Hello everyone...

So my husband and I have been discussing getting a backpack-type travel cage for Marcus. He is just in love with his Paradise Perch and Go travel cage--rather, he is in love with the fact that he can leave the house with us now--but honestly I think another carrier would be better for him, something we can really take him out and about in, comfortably, for longer spells. I know a number of forum members here have the Pak-O-Bird carrier, but I like the idea of the Adventure Pack a little better because it is a real cage inside of the backpack, and therefore would seem a bit stronger and more durable to me.

I was consequently wondering if anyone here uses an Adventure Pack for taking their Grey around with them, and what the pros and cons of it might be. Thanks in advance for any input! :)

My local bird store has one on the shelf and I've looked at it several times, but never could bring myself to purchase. I didn't feel it was sufficient in size for my grey or constructed well enough for the price. The cage bars are very very slim and the canvas covering is thinner than I would have hoped for and is not sewn well. That same backpack has been in the store for over two years, while other types have sold and been restocked. I personally perfer the pak-o-bird (http://www.celltei.com/pamesibicast.html) but still haven't purchased one as of yet. There have been other threads discussing the adventure pack and the pak-o-bird.

I have the adventure pack and like Robin I feel it is too small for a grey, its construction seems to lend itself to the smaller birds and I have used it for my conure or tiel but I go for something bigger for my grey and it is not something that can be carried for any length of time but I use it for transport. If you want to include your grey on outings maybe you should consider harness training Marcus to be able for him to accompany you on short outings.

We have a Pak-O-Bird carrier and components of it can definitely be destroyed by a dedicated bird. Also, the sides kind of cave in. I think the cage within a carrier might be better. Although, I bet it does not stop adventuresome greys from reaching through and gnawing on the backpack part.

I have folding wire travel cages for my parrots. I like them because they are are quick to assemble and also easy to store. I use them for cages for my three when I go to my daughter's home for the weekend or so. They are large enough for my parrots to climb around in and small enough to be convenient.

I have an Adventure pack and feel that it does the job for short outings. Short meaning just a few hours. Emma is an average sized grey and it does a pretty decent job for her.

Thank you so much for sharing your video! Now I have a much better idea of the size of the Adventure Pack and everything, it definitely looks like it would be perfect for short jaunts and things, which is what I'd like for Marcus... just the other day I told my husband that I think it's about time to order one for him, after sitting on the fence for so long, and he finally agreed and said that I could once he gets paid again (yay!). So may I ask you if you bought yours directly through Parrot and Conure World, or some other vendor? They seem to be the ones that produce them, at least. Anyway, thank you again so much for commenting in this thread, I really appreciate it. :)

P.S.--I just watched the vid again and your Emma is so cute when she starts 'dancing' when you can hear the plane going overhead! :)

Well, Marcus' new Adventure Pack Travel Cage was delivered today... at first, I wanted to allow my husband the honor of putting everything together, but then I re-read everything and figured I could probably do it without too many issues. (I am not very good with that type of thing, haha!) Thankfully, I think I did everything right, and now the Adventure Pack is assembled and the canvas backpack has successfully be zipped up onto it. I am not quite sure what to do about the snaps though, there does not seem to be enough to roll up the little 'window shades' on the sides, because I snapped the top on everywhere the snaps seemed to line up, and there's none left over... ah, well.

Anyway, on to the important thing: How is Marcus reacting to it? At this point, he is fine if I just have him step-up onto my hand, and then I place him inside. I made the mistake at first of trying to shut the door and zip up the back end; he got a little upset over that, and he was breathing kind of heavily. :( So I told him he was a good boy when I took him out, I told him how much fun the cage will be. And so the next time I offered him to go inside again, he stepped into the travel cage and I didn't try and shut the door or anything. He looked around for a moment and then--up came the foot! (So cute!) So I let him step-up and out of the cage, we cuddled, I distracted him with the computer for a minute or two, and then we tried again. That time, too, he waited for a few moments and then up popped his little foot to step-up! So we will just have to do things at his pace, and we'll see how things work out in a week or two.

Bunsen did "model" the pack for a bit (she wasn't too happy to be in it all zipped up, either), so I know Marcus knows what it's for now, and when I put it to the side all zipped-up and empty, Marcus went "Whoo!" and I asked him if he liked it, and he gave his equivalent of 'yes' ("Woof, woof!" ...Don't ask me where that came from, because I don't know!).

So it seems like a nicely-designed little out-for-an-afternoon travel cage, and I will post pictures and et cetera once Marcus has become more comfortable with it. :)

I was thinking about getting one.. My grey Zeus is wide and weighs 500+ grams... how much does marcus weigh? Currently when i travel he is in a homemade pak o bird.. I used a i go pet plus http://www.petco.com/product/109959/Pet-Gear-I-GO2-Black-Traveler-Plus.aspx and made a pvc perch i put on the inside. the front was so chewed, that Zeus can slide him self out of the bottom and ive only had it for 3 months

Karen, maybe eventually you'll try this too :)

Oh, a part of me would enjoy that very much someday! And thanks for sharing the video of Mabel, she is a lovely girl! :)

Imayes69: Your baby sounds a bit larger than our Marcus, but on the box it says that the Adventure Pack can hold up to 'small cockatoos' so perhaps he could fit after all. Marcus is quite comfortable in the Pack now and we've gone on a few nice walks with the dog... I have yet to get my hubby to take any pics of us, though! I will share them when I can and hopefully that may help with you making a decision, too.

Before I even decided I wanted a Grey I wanted one of these! There is an man in our area with a grey he takes everywhere (even the bar lol) in a travel carrier around his neck! She seems so happy and so does he. Actually once we were trying to rescue some ducks (long story), and he put her carrier down and was helping her and she started calling for him, he was like yeah she gets pretty jealous lol

How are yours working out ?
