CAG possibly sick?

I have had my grey for 2 weeks now, he is 15 weeks old. I took him to the vet last friday and he got a clean bill of health. Last weekend my brother was cleaning and kicked up too much dust near the room Albert (my CAG) was in. That night, he developed a somewhat raspy voice. Other than the voice thing, he has been acting normal all week until the last day or two. I have noticed that his appetite has somewhat diminished, he prefers to only eat the nuts that I give him as a treat and not the pellets also, he isn't taking much for formula as I have him on one feeding per day.

I called and talked to the vet a couple of days ago and she said that it was probably the dust and if it doesn't get better by the end of the week, that I should maybe make an appointment again.

Does this happen to anyone else's bird? I just want to see if this voice problem will get better on its own.

I should probably also mention that he has no other signs of illness (nares, droppings, etc)

Thanks,

Joe

He is a baby and babies are sensitive. You have to be careful not only with dust, but with everything you use around him. His immunity is not developed yet, it will take till after he is 1 year to develop a stronger immune system. All utensils you use for feeding him, all his toys , foodand water bowls should be regularly cleaned and disinfected if possible. I used to boil them to make sure they are germ free. Please be very careful and if he doesnt get better (the appetite & activity level) please dont hesitate to go to the vet asap. Those greys are very smart at hiding signs of illness. I've lost a baby grey once and for that Im very careful now. I hope there is nothing serious, but better to be careful. Please keep us posted on his condition.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't know all of that about their immunity. I have been disinfecting and washing everything that I use for feeding/food as well as cage etc. I should have an air purifier delivered today so I hope that helps and I went ahead and made a vet appointment for sat morning if he is not getting better by then.

Does the raspy/congested throat always mean an infection?

Well I dont really know if this means infection but I really hope not. Just watch your baby carefully and I hope this will be nothing, keep him warm and comfortable and feed him more regularly in case he is not eating his full meal. It doesnt hurt to give him formula if he is not eating his pellets. Make sure he is drinking and pooping regularly as well.

Please keep us updated on his condition :)

I dont really know, but his activity level should indicate if he feels alright or no. I am not sure about body temperature. Check his feet, warmer or colder than usual? Does he fluff his feathers and tend to sit in the corner and close his eyes... these are some of the signs of sickness. Also regurigation and poop status. You mentioned his poop looks like usual, keep watching for signs. Hopefully some more experienced members can post their opinion. Keep him warm and if he is showing the mentioned sickness signs, keep him rested in a quiet place and take him to the vet tomorrow. If he shows those signs, then better start him on treatment as early as possible. But I truely hope you see non of those signs. If he is active and playing, then I hope all is ok. Keep the updates...

Body temp seems normal. He was pretty active tonight but still isn't eating as much as he normally had been. He just doesn't seem to have as much of an appetite. I was able to get him interested in some beans and an apple. He always want to eat nuts but I am trying not to give him too many. Does anyone else have experience with a parrot losing/having a raspy voice?

I hope he is doing better today, try some banana, it gives him energy. Try also the formula, even if you have to hand feed him. Eat infront of him and make sounds while you eat...it will arouse his curiosity to eat... kookie always eats more and better when we share a banana or an apple together than when he eats on his own...

I think he is getting better as far as his appetite is concerned. He ate a bunch of apple and bean cuisine last night. I think I have been spoiling him with the seeds as he doesn't want to eat his pellets anymore so I am reducing that and hope he starts eating his pellets again. I still have an appointment for tomorrow morning and if his voice has not improved tonight when I get home from work, I will make sure to take him in again.

Just thought I would update here that he is back to full health and is doing wonderfully. He is eating a ton and trying new things everyday.

Thats greyt news now keep up the good work and updates even if he is healthy and pics would not be refused either.
