My husband just came home with what I think is an African Grey. We have no idea how old he is and he refuses to eat formula ( we bought Kaytee exact).

A man offered him to my husband for 100.00. He is all dirty with formula and refuses to eat. I don't know if to clean him or not.

I hope that worked.

This morning he/she was more inclined to eat. Actually he/she ate pretty well. How can I clean him/her up?

Your grey is in this age catagory. It's hard to give an exact number.

6 weeks

7 weeks

8 weeks

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You would clean the bird off by taking a very soft paper towel ( 3 on top of each other) put very warm water on it and stroke the dirt from the top of the bird down to the tail. This must be done very gently. If the dirt is around the beak, eyes, nose, also do those areas.

I have no idea how much you're feeding , how many times a day you're feeding but we have a basic hand feeding schedule in a special section on the board in the nursery room-----**How to feed a Baby Grey***

This is extremely important------

You must go to an avian vet and have that tumor above the right wing and immediately have it looked at. It's urgent that you do that. You need to do it quickly..

Oh jesus, I can not believe some one sold you a baby grey that young and especially for 100.

Dave our resident breeder/expert has given the best advice anyone could. It is imperative you follow his instructions. I pray you and your new baby make it through this tough journey.

Thank you all for the Prayers.

He could be that old even if he has no feathers out like the ones in the pics?

I'm feeding him 3 times a day. He seems to eat very well now ( at least the last 2 times I've fed him.

Are you sure that's a tumor? It inflates and deflates, for example when I fed him it inflated it's air inside and then after a couple of minutes it deflates. None-the-less I will be taking him to the vet tomorrow.

Pictures can be deceiving but to me, that swelling looks like it's on top of the upper part of the wing. The area that gets swollen is under the face in the chest area. Anyway, get to a vet quickly. Just about any one who gets an unweaned chick also goes to a vet very promptly.

After feeding a bird looks like this after being fed.

Has the vet said what that bubble that inflates/deflates is? I've never seen anything like that before.

I actually saw that on Egan right after he ate when I went to see him a couple of weeks ago. I guess the crop does kind of poke out a bit back there. The breeder assured me that it was fine and now that he is a bit older with more feather covering, I didn't notice it at all this past Monday and she fed him while I was there.

I'm glad to hear your baby is healthy and doing well! I'd love to see more pictures. :) How old did the vet say he/she is? I'm guessing 4 or 5 weeks comparing to pictures of Kito when she was a baby.

The vet said it was an air sac which helps birds fly. He also said he was about 5 weeks old.

He has really warmed up to everyone in the house, including the dogs. I've bathed him with a soft cloth and he now as most of his feathers puffy. He loves to cuddle and makes a sound with his beak when we do.

Whenever I have my hands wet he loves to drink the water is that normal being that he is so young? I think he also likes to bathe because whenver he see me cleaning up after feeding him he trys to get in the sink. He is picking at everything and tried to give him a pellet he tried to eat it but he is still to weak. Is that ok, or should I not try giving him anymore pellets?

Here are more pictures of him.

Thanks for the pictures! Baby looks good, does he/she have a name yet? What a cutie pie. :)

I introduced Kito to healthy cereal like multigrain cheerios, chex, cooked veggies, small pellets, etc., around this age. You can give him toys to play with and a stick that won't roll so he can start learning to perch too. Kito also liked snuggling with her stuffed toy lamb. She still likes to drink water from my fingers and she is almost 2. If I remember correctly I think I started giving her baths about the time her wings were mostly feathered and her tail and flights started appearing. Someone more experienced can give you better recommendations. Congratulations, it sounds like you are doing a great job so far!

Thanks. I'm so excited! I can't wait for him to start eating on his own, get all his feathers and start talking.

I don't what to name him or her. I want Galileo if he's a boy but what if he is a girl...lol?

Ohh thank goodness. When I saw those first pictures my heart was sad for the little guy. Now, in the most recent pictures, he looks wonderful! So glad to see that this baby found his way into some caring hands. Get yourself ready for quite a ride with these lil guys. ;) They are incredible little creatures.
