Tail feathers mostly grey?

I am just curious. I have read of course that Timneh's have darker maroon tails compared to the red CAG tail. However, Lollie's is mostly grey with a hint of maroon/red. Will this change or will she always have a grey tail? I've tried to google it but cannot find any information. She is 7 months old, when would I expect her to go through her first molt?

If she's a TAG, the color won't change. Her tail color is the standard for TAGs. Many TAGs have touches of red ijn them, some more than others, some less. I have a TAG and his tail feathers are completely dark ash ( almost black) gray color. No red at all, not even marroon.

 

Molting--first time--9 to 12 mts

depending on dryness of living area, in the future it could be 11 to 13 mts.

 

Flight and tail feathers will molt all year long in no particular time frame. All parrots do that.

I guess the way they describe Timneh's tail feathers is deceiving, makes it sound like the whole tail is maroon like Congo's are red. It doesn't matter to me...I just was wondering where the maroon was!! Thanks Dave!

I just got a TAG as well and her tail has just a touch of maroon on the tip, the rest is pretty much black/ash colored.

Great question. We watched a baby CAG molt his first tail feathers and when the new ones came in they were bright red. Gilbert, our TAG has dark tail feathers that he had partially plucked and here I was thinking when they molt and grow back naturally, they might be brighter in color. Silly me, he is between seven and ten years old, so they will be coming in the same color. Your question and replies were the first time I considered that flawed logic. Thanks for bringing up the topic. Also, the first time I saw an African grey was in a pet shop decades ago. I thought to myself as I looked the splendid colors of other birds that one was plain next to them. Then as life has taken its many turns, I have discovered the joy of the character of this deceptively unadorned little package and have gotten a closer look at the beauty and simplicity of our African greys. Now I can not imagine why I thought they way I did. I find myself mesmerized by Gilbert's beauty and grace and even in the nuances of color and pattern in his feathers.

Sully has some maroon, some grey, and a couple of red freckles on it (that extend from his legs) I'm hoping he keeps the freckles! lol
