staggy
Was wondering, has anyone here ever owned a bare eyed cockatoo?? My wife and I were possibly thinking of adopting one, there is a woman locally who has some babies. I have read up online for a few weeks, but wondered if anyone had 1st hand experience?! I welcome all your opinions B)
Guest Monique
How familiar are you with Cockatoos? They are generally the neediest of birds and most recently rehomed. They have very loud squawks, they have a split mandible that if they bite it will hurt FAR worse than another parrot ... they also LOVE to be physically loved (except for a few species and of course individuals). They're squawks are VERY loud. And they put off a very very very fine dust from their feathers. I think they are wonderful birds but maybe people do not know what they are getting into when they get one. Primarily because they are so endearing and affectionate ... without any hang-ups yet as babies. We had a Moluccan Cockatoo previously, it did not work out and we had to re-home her. She was actually damaging my daughter's hearing . Moluccan's are the loudest of Cockatoos, though, I highly doubt a Bare-Eyed is that loud. staggy
Monique I had a Moluccan growing up and my mother also had her rehomed. She was a beautiful bird but very loud!! i love the cuddly-ness of the cockatoos and thats what was endearing to me, although i do not want to take in a bird at this time that will eventually need to be rehomed. i want to be very well educated before i just jump feet first. Thanks for your input!
lovemyGreys
Hi Staggy,as you know these birds are not for everyone. understanding the bird,s vocalization and body language is very important in creating a successful relationship with them .Without the proper care these birds can become nervous and aggressive. They can have a tendency to pluck & some can be really loud screamers. Please do some research to see if a cockatoo is the right bird for you, they need alot of interaction & dont like to be left for long periods.Personally & only in my opinion i would not have a cockatoo. My friend runs a rescue here in the UK & the majority of birds for rehoming are cockatoos.
Tari
You got some great replies here and I really don't have anything to add except they are the most re homed around here. They can be loud and yes they are very needy.

judygram
I agree they are needy birds, they don't call them velcro birds for nothing. I personally have never had one but I have considered it but decided against it for the very reason of the loudness of their calls. They are cuddly birds and that is what makes them so endearing but you have to be able to take that screaming. But please do let us know what you do decide to do. Percysmum
I've had a few 'toos growing up. One of them was a bare eyed and I've got one coming within the next month from a rescue (she's a disabled bird). They are one of the quieter 'toos but to be honest that's not saying much. It's like comparing a 10 earthquake to maybe an 8. They are a little less neurotic then their larger cousins (ie greater sulphur crested) but none the less can be quite demanding. One of my concerns is how much disruption will a baby 'too cause to your grey.
