Gender of my tiels.

I agree with you on Audi because the underside of her tail is barbed and not a solid grey and there is not much yellow in her head.

As a baby they all look alike but the male will change to a bright yellow head and solid grey under the tail.

Peugeot looks like a pearl and the female will keep her pearl markings and the male will end up looking like a reg. grey tiel after the first molt.

Your Tiels aren't very old, are they? My Shelby is only 7 months old. I know he is male even though he has lines on his tail and pearls because he says over five words now, he sings full songs and my vet sexed him as a male.

From six months to nine months is when a male will molt his pearls off and grow in tail feathers that are bar free.

Males do tend to talk and whistle while females mostly just contact call. However, There are females that talk and whistle.

Here is my male, still with his pearls, whistling and saying 'pretty bird' for reference:

You can see that he is also doing heart wings, which is a male trait.

Female tiels are very hard to find here. I am looking for a female companion for my new tiel, Opel. I want to keep them in an aviary. I called up a few breeders, all they have are males.

I have a breeding pair in the aviary. The hen laid 3 eggs last months. I kept them together with budgies and a male budgie went in the nestbox killing 2 newly hatched babies and destroying the other egg which had a chick in it. I separated the tiels by keeping them in a cage while waiting for a big cage (6'L x 3'W x 6'H) to arrive. A friend is giving me this giant cage. Yesterday the hen laid an egg.

Sorry to hear you lost your baby tiels that way. I know that they don`t recomend keeping cockatiels and budgies together but, I have had a cockatiel and a budgie that lived in the same cage for years and they were best friends.

I read that a budgie would or could torment a tiel because the budgies are so active.

My wife and I have had cockatiels for 39 years and we love them to death. They may be small in size but they are big in attitude and personality.

My friends told me that they are not recommended to keep together if I want to breed them. Budgies are notorious. They like to kill other babies even their own kind.

There are 2 eggs now in the nestbox.
