How long should you let your greys nails grow until its time for a clipping/filing?

I don't have my grey yet, but for my macaws I keep a concrete perch in their cage, positioned where they will step on and off. This keeps them filed down for me. If they become to a sharp point to where it hurts to hold them its time. Don't try this yourself. Take it to breeder or vet to do this, and some pet stores will trim. If u do it yourself, keep some quick stop. flour or cornmeal handy for it is easy to cut them to short.

If it's too painful for me to do a "step up", it would be time to go for a nail trim. I have three perches in his cage that are "nail trimmers".

I have several rough perches for Josey, my grey but she must not be using them much as her nails are very sharp but I would never attempt to do them myself, I leave that for the vet to take care of.

I have read that if the bird is on a flat surface, the end of the toes should not be lifted to far up due to the long nails.

I read the same thing and also I have cement swings that do a great job. They have to hold on tight when they swing and that keeps the points from being to sharp.
