Cage Covers - Yes or No?

We will be getting our 1st CAG in mid July. We already have the cage. The cage will be in our den.

 

Do most use a cover at night? If so, what is the preferred material type/thickness? Are there any "ventilation" concerns?

Some people use covers and some don`t.

We cover are birds with a sheet to give them some private time because our house is very active. Some members have a sleep cage. And some members have a bird room.

A lot will be up to you and the way your house is .

I would say if your cage will be in the family room or wherever the family spends most of their time when home then you need to cover the cage. I cover mine with a black sheet and have since I have had them in my house, they know its time to sleep and they are not distracted by us moving around. Some people use sleep cages for their greys placed in a room where they will not be disturbed but it is a personal preference, one member has a grey who has night frights occasionally and she gets up to calm her down when that happens.

I use a sheet that is dark in color and it is not heavy enough to cut off air circulation.

i use a light sheet for kallie and an old lace table cloth for athena. i leave the front of their cages uncovered so in case they get startled during the night they'll have a bit of light to be able to see better. their cages are in our living room, so this gives them a sense of privacy and they know its night night time.

I will try a sheet and like the idea of leaving the front partially open. Should I fret too much on the material or dyes used in making the sheet?

I cover my birds cage at night also. I go to the fabric store and get printed fabrics and have fun with Babalu's covers. If it is getting late and he is in his cage he starts whistling, talking and making loud sounds. It reminds me of a kid who is tired, they just act crazy Once he is covered he is quite.

Our birds that are in a separate bird room do not get covers, as their light is turned out and the door closed at bed time. The birds that are in the dining area do get loosely covered at night. We use some tightly woven dark-colored tablecloths. The covers all get washed every couple of weeks.

My parrots have a bird room and go to sleep at 7:00 pm much earlier than me. Around that time, my ekkie, screams and Louie, the Zon, starts his "Nite, nite Louie, see you in the morning, thank you" routine. Now Ana Grey has to be lured into her cage to get her to go down for the night. I don't cover them as I keep their room at 68º and want they to have circulated air.
