Guest jaquiscorpio Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Hi there me again i have recieved my feather sexing kit from avianbiotech and would like some advice in regards to the best way to get the chest feathers required for the test. How to get them and with little pain as possible (will it hurt as i see it same as plucking eyebrows) or do they come out quite easily any help advice much appreciated Jaqui
Spinner Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Jaqui, I would strongly recommend taking your bird to an avian vet and have them draw blood for you. You can then apply that to your test card, or have your vet run it. Please do not pull a feather as this is painful to your grey and could cause larger problems. Even for the babies that I raise, I draw blood rather than risk having them bleed out or be damaged in some way.
judygram Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Thanks Dave for that answer to her question, I have never pulled feathers for a dna test as the one on Josey was using blood from a nail but I feared that pulling some chest feathers would inflict pain on a bird you are trying to bond with.
Guest jaquiscorpio Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 i wondered this and was reluctant to do it without consulting people with a bit more know how before even attempting it
