Broken Beak.

Hi, Anyone ever had a parrot break it's beak in a fight with another pet while you were away?

My ringneck acts all macho and got into a fight with the CAG and now has it's left side of the beak torn from the face. It has been fifteen days since this, the bird is fine. Please tell me it will grow back. Someone said it does, but I just wanted to get a second opinion here.

Really depends on the extent of damage and where. Can you post a picture? Greys are one species flock animals. It is not recommended they be allowed out with other species and certainly never (with any parrots) should they be unsupervised. This is a recipe for disaster and even death.

I'm so sorry to hear about this, but they should not have been allowed out together, it was just lucky the whole beak wasn't torn off. I would at least consult an avian vet for his opinion, like birdgranna said they have nerves and blood vessels in them and it should be looked at.

I know their beaks grow all the time, but whether the part bitten off will grow back, I am not sure about. My sun conure had a damaged beak when I got her, her sibling bit thru the side, and it is still noticeable to me. It does not hinder her in any way but it has not went away.

Yes, I would have the vet check him to be certain that things are okay. You have to be careful of infection if nothing else. And I would never let him out unsupervised with another bird.

Please keep us updated on his condition and what the vet report is.

Post edited by: Talon, at: 2007/09/02 02:23

Our previous Grey fell to the floor (she plucked her feathers so bad she could not glide) and broke her beak. She was just fine. It looked quite awful and scared the beejeebies out of us but it grew back fine.

This is why I keep telling people. Don't let you birds "play" together. It's just not a good idea.

I agree you need to go to the vet no matter how small the beak injury is. You can't see the inside and it could be worse then it looks.

Please keep us posted.

Hello All,

Just got back from work after an hour and a half of commute.

The beak broke on her left side nostril, ripping it off the face. Now they are placed far from each other. No one is home to watch them so now the cages are secured to ensure no fights and all.

The ring neck is just a sweetheart. I will look for a avian vet now.

Falconeer, I am very sorry to hear about this incident and truly hope that your ring neck will be OK...Can you post a pic of the damage? Please keep us updated on the status and let this serve as a reminder/lesson to us all about the potential danger in allowing birds together unsupervised. I am very sorry this has happened, but each members experience allows the rest of us to learn. Thank you for sharing and I hope that the prognosis will be a good one.
