Upinthehills
Hi everyone. I've been lurking for about a week and figured I should introduce myself. I recently got my grey back after an 11 year break. When both of my kids were toddlers, Greyson (my grey) wasn't handling their noise and intrusiveness well. My mother-in-law offered to take Grey for a while until my kids got older. I really didn't want to do that, but thought it might be best for him. Of course, she fell in love with him and didn't want to give him up when my kids were a little older, so she kept him until about a week ago. Her health is now failing and she wasn't able to continue caring for him, so he's back home. He's 17 years old now, I first got him shortly after he was weaned. He's a fabulous bird and I'm so glad he's back where he belongs. I'm very grateful that I was able to visit him and see him often over the years, so this transition hasn't been too traumatic for him. At least I don't think it has been. He's still the happy and affectionate boy he's always been. He is plucking his feathers some, so I'll try to get a handle on that. Anyway, enough about us. I apologize to the other Grayson here, but it's a good name. )
Luvparrots
Very nice introduction. I look forward to hearing more about Greyson and seeing some pictures. Welcome to the Grey Family!
Upinthehills
Thank you for the welcome, luvparrots. I had added an avatar picture, but it isn't showing. I'll go see if I can figure it out. I guess it's a profile picture rather than an avatar. I don't know why it isn't showing. Off to see if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong... judygram
Hello Upinthehills and welcome to our family, glad you got your grey back after a long absence but at least you have been able to stay in touch and be a part of his life. Things happen in life and we deal with them the best we can, it was good of your mother to take Greyson in when your kids were small but then she fell in love with him, I hope he is back to stay this time. Since you haven't been a stranger to him while he was in your mother's care he should do fine, its not like he is going back to people he hasn't seen in years but you will have to try to figure out why he is plucking his feathers now. How long has he been doing that? I am looking forward to seeing some pictures of him when you get the chance.
Upinthehills
The plucking has been for the last year or so. She's had him to her vet three times in that stretch and nothing was found. I suspect that as her health has been deteriorating he has been more stressed. It was my mother-in-law, not my mom. Not that that really matters. Upinthehills
Oh, sorry Sherrie, I thought it was with an A. I thought I'd seen it spelled that way, but it's possible it wasn't you that had written it. I'll get my husband to take some more pictures. I'm not all that happy with what we have now. Thank you all for welcoming me. I appreciate it.
Sherrie
No Problem at all up... The "typical" spelling for the name is with an "A" but I purposely spell it with "E" because he's a GrEy and he's my son!!! Lol!!!! Im sorry to hear your mom in law is not feeling well. Try to find out what his routine was while at your MIL before her health started to fail When the plucking was 1st noticed, see if you can determine what might have changed in his diet/routine etc....How much attention is he getting during the day, is he getting much time out of the cage? knowing these things could help pinpoint why he's plucking- I wish you all the best and looking forward to seeing some pics!!!!! Birdie hugs to you and Greyson!
Greymatter
Welcome to you & Greyson! I'm sure he remembers you - hopefully he'll be able to conquer his plucking issues sooner than later.
BenzMama
What a wonderful homecoming for you both! May the transition continue to go smoothly. As soon as he settles in well & you both get readjusted to new routines, things will hopefully improve with his plucking. We look forward to hearing of your adventures with Greyson. Upinthehills
Thanks everyone. He's settled in nicely. I think his plucking has decreased, but time will tell. His diet has vastly improved, he's eating Harrison's pellets, bird bread, a veggie/grain/bean mix and whatever other fresh foods daily. My mother-in-law had been feeding him seeds and some fresh vegetables. I'm not giving him any seeds now, but may give him a few as a treat once in a while. I'll have to post a list of the things he says, it must be over fifty different sentences plus the usual sound effects and whistles. He makes me laugh when he does a big screech then says, "No screeching! Shame on you!" He also tells the dogs, "Shame on you!" whenever they get too close to his cage. Of course, my favorite is when he says, "mmmmm I love you."
Lindaindy
Hello. I am new here so may have some trouble learning how to get around. I am planning on buying a Grey soon. The breeder called me tonight & I am going on Satuday to see the babies. Not sure of the hatch date yet. I know this site will be very helpful & informative. So I will say Thanks right now!
